Mary Hardy (comedian)
Mary Veronica Hardy (14 October 1931 – 4 to 7 January 1985) was an Australian television and radio presenter, actress, writer and comedian. She was best known for her caustic wit, indifference to authority and tireless ability to ad lib. On receiving one of her many Logie Awards, she quipped: “In all sincerity I don’t want to thank anybody”. Biography Mary Hardy was born in Warrnambool and brought up in Bacchus Marsh. The youngest of eight children; her parents were Winifred Mary (née Bourke) and Thomas John Hardy; the author Frank Hardy was her brother. Her professional acting career began in 1950, when she was noticed by J. C. Williamson, where she worked for several years in various productions. In 1957, as Peter in the J. C. Warrnambool (; Eastern Maar, Maar: ''Peetoop'' or ''Wheringkernitch'' or ''Warrnambool'') is a city on the south-western coast of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. At the Census in Australia#2021, 2021 census, Warrnambool had a population of 32,894. Situated on the Princes Highway, Warrnambool (Allansford) marks the western end of the Great Ocean Road and the southern end of the Hopkins Highway. The Phillip Street Theatre (succeeded by the Phillip Theatre) was a popular and influential Australian theatre and theatrical company, located in Phillip Street in Sydney that was active from 1954 and 1971 that became well known for its intimate satirical revue productions. History Founding William Orr was a Scottish-born impresario from Glasgow who had a background as a director and theatre administrator in London before coming to Australia. Orr felt that there was a market in Australia for the new British theatre craze, the intimate topical satirical revue, and he pioneered the format in Sydney during 1954. Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). They usually pull a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, spider, or chariot occupied by a driver. Mike Williamson (broadcaster)
Michael Francis Williamson (June 1928 – 2 May 2019) was an Australian sports commentator and television presenter Career Williamson was a well-performed professional runner. Having been banned from professional foot-running for "running dead", he became a sports commentator of Australian rules football matches in the Victorian Football League with radio stations 3AK and 3AW before joining the HSV-7 television station in 1959 as part of its VFL football broadcast team. Significant moments in Williamson's commentary career include the 1966 VFL Grand Final, when St Kilda won their first premiership, as well as the 1970 VFL Grand Final in which Williamson exclaimed "Jesaulenko, you beauty!" when Carlton player Alex Jesaulenko took a dramatic contested mark. ''The Penthouse Club'' was an Australian weekly variety program produced live to air from the studios of HSV-7 Melbourne from 10 October 1970. It was originally hosted by Michael Williamson (also a football commentator for HSV) and comedian Mary Hardy. Production and synopsis The program, screening each Saturday night from around 8.30 pm (the starting time varied over the years depending on HSV-7's Saturday night VFL football commitments), was a mix of comedy, light entertainment and live coverage of harness racing from the RAS Showgrounds and, later, Moonee Valley racecourse. The weekly lottery draw Tattslotto was incorporated as a segment in the program from around 1972. HSV is a television station in Melbourne, Australia. It is part of the Seven Network, one of the three main commercial television networks in Australia, its first and oldest station. It launched in time for the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne. HSV-7 is the home of Australian Football League, AFL coverage. The HSV building (also known as 'Broadcast Centre Melbourne') was the network's operations hub, where the Master Control Room was located, controlling all metropolitan and regional feeds. Its headquarters is next to Etihad Stadium (now Docklands Stadium, Marvel Stadium). Programming lineup, advertisement output, feed switching, time zone monitoring and national transmission output was previously delivered there. Graham Cyril Kennedy Order of Australia, AO (15 February 1934 – 25 May 2005) was an Australian entertainer, comedian and variety performer, radio and television host as well as a personality and actor of theatre, television and film. He was often referred to as "The King of Television" or simply "The King" and called "Gra Gra" (pronounced "gray-gray"). GTV is a commercial television station in Melbourne, Australia, owned by the Nine Network. The station is currently based at studios at 717 Bourke Street, Docklands. GTV-9 is the home of the Australian Open tennis coverage. History GTV-9 was amongst the first television stations to begin regular transmission in Australia. Test transmissions began on 27 September 1956, introduced by former 3DB radio announcer Geoff Corke, based at the Mount Dandenong transmitter, as the studios in Richmond were not yet ready. ''In Melbourne Tonight'', also known as ''IMT'', was a highly popular nightly Logie award-winning Australian variety show, variety television show produced at GTV-9 Melbourne from 6 May 1957 to 1970. Overview Graham Kennedy was the show's main host and star attraction, but other presenters were often called on to present the show on certain nights. ''In Melbourne Tonight'' had as many as 50 different presenters over its 13 years on air. The format of the show was inspired by the American ''The Tonight Show'' on NBC, but Kennedy's exuberant charisma was the key to the success of ''IMT''. The show originally had its own self-titled theme song, written by ''IMT'' first band leader, Lee Gallagher, but for most of its run, it adopted an uptempo version of the swing tune of ''Gee, But You're Swell'', written by Abel Baer and Charles Tobias in 1936.
