Manzanita, Oregon
Manzanita is a coastal city in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. It is located on U.S. Route 101 about equidistant from Seaside to the north and Tillamook to the south. The population was 603 at the 2020 census. History The indigenous Tillamook people lived along the Oregon coast, including the Manzanita area (tidewaters of the Nehalem Bay), for about 12,000 years. They suffered from smallpox and other illnesses brought by white settlers, and the few remaining Tillamook people were relocated to the Siletz and Grand Ronde reservations in the 1850s. At least two of Oregon's historical shipwrecks occurred off the Manzanita coast: the ''Glenesslin'' in 1913'','' and the ''Santo Cristo de Burgos'' (disappeared 1693) which has generated rumors of treasure buried on Neahkahnie Mountain. Neahkahnie Beach (or Neahkahnie) is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. It is located west of U.S. Route 101, comprising approximately 370 residences north of the city of Manzanita, at the foot of Neahkahnie Mountain. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Neahkahnie as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. According to the 2020 Census, the population was 197. Mary Frances Isom
Mary Frances Isom (February 27, 1865 – April 15, 1920) was a librarian, and one of the founders of the Oregon Library Association, the Pacific Northwest Library Association and the Oregon State Library Commission. She was instrumental in the formerly private Portland Library Association being opened to the public as what is now the Central Library Building in Portland. Biography Mary Isom was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1865 to Dr. John Franklin Isom and Frances A. Isom. Her family was originally from Cleveland, and returned there after the Civil War. She went to Wellesley for one year, but her college was interrupted at the end of that year so she could return to Cleveland to care for her father. When her father died in 1899, she enrolled at the library program at Pratt Institute at the advice of her friend Josephine Rathbone, who was then a faculty member there.
