Mary Dicas
Mary Dicas became Mary Arstall (fl. 1800–1818) was a scientific instrument maker in Liverpool. Her company created thousands of hydrometers that were exported to America where ''Dicas & Co'' enjoyed a monopoly as the agreed instrument for calculating the tax on alcoholic beverages. Life The date of Dicas's birth is unclear but her parents Alice Edmonton and John Dicas married on 9 July 1777 in Chester and she was the elder daughter. Her brother, who does not appear to have survived, was baptised in 1787. By 1800 her father's lucrative business was trading in her name and he died before 1802. Her father had traded alcoholic drink in Liverpool but he was known for his invention of a type of hydrometer which he had patented in 1780. His patent number 1259 specified the use of sliding rules which allowed a look up of the strength of the liquor. Bartholomew Sikes
Bartholomew Sikes (died 1803) was an officer in the employ of HM Excise who in the late 18th century perfected a device by which the alcoholic content of a liquid can be measured. In 1802 he presented his invention to a board of inquiry together with nine other competitors who included Mary Dicas of Liverpool whose hydrometer was the approved instrument by the American excise. Sikes' device was chosen over the other nine. The success of the device caused his name to be immortalised in an Act of Parliament: Sikes' Hydrometer Act 1816 ( 56 Geo. 3. c. 140). Vernier Scale
A vernier scale ( ), named after Pierre Vernier, is a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical interpolation, which increases resolution and reduces measurement uncertainty by using vernier acuity. It may be found on many types of instrument measuring length or measuring angles, but in particular on a vernier caliper, which measures lengths of human-scale objects (including internal and external diameters). The vernier is a subsidiary scale replacing a single measured-value pointer, and has for instance ten divisions equal in distance to nine divisions on the main scale. The interpolated reading is obtained by observing which of the vernier scale graduations is coincident with a graduation on the main scale, which is easier to perceive than visual estimation between two points. The octant, also called a reflecting quadrant (instrument), quadrant, is a reflecting instrument used in navigation.
