Mary C. MacNiven
Mary Connell MacNiven, born McNiven and sometimes billed as Mrs Campbell/Mrs John Campbell (15 September 1905 – 25 March 1997) was an award-winning Gaelic singer and the inspiration behind the famous Scottish song ''Mairi's Wedding''. Early life and family Mary Connell McNiven (later changed to MacNiven) was born in Glasgow on 15 September 1905. She was one of eight children born to Dugald McNiven (1856-1933), a grain storeman, and Christina McNiven, née Connell (1863-1949). Her parents were both originally from the island of Islay, her father was born near the village of Bowmore and her mother was from Portnahaven. The family grew up in the community of Scottish Gaels that thrived in Glasgow in the first half of the 20th century. An Comunn Gàidhealach (; literally "The Gaelic Association"), commonly known as An Comunn, is a Scottish organisation that supports and promotes the Scottish Gaelic language and Scottish Gaelic culture and history at local, national and international levels. The society is closely associated with the Royal National Mòd. The symbol used for An Comunn Gàidhealach is the Irish Sunburst flag at the top also a symbol associated in Irish mythology and the Celtic harp on the bottom right. Billy Connolly
Sir William Connolly (born 24 November 1942) is a Scottish actor, musician, television presenter, artist and retired stand-up comedian. He is sometimes known by the Scots nickname the Big Yin ("the Big One"). Known for his idiosyncratic and often improvised observational comedy, frequently including strong language, Connolly has topped many UK polls as the greatest stand-up comedian of all time. In 2017, he was knighted at Buckingham Palace for services to entertainment and charity. In 2022, he received the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Connolly's trade, in the early 1960s, was that of a welder (specifically a boilermaker) in the Glasgow shipyards, but he gave it up towards the end of the decade to pursue a career as a folk singer. The Corries
The Corries were a Scottish folk group that emerged from the Scottish folk revival of the early 1960s. The group was a trio from their formation until 1966 when founder Bill Smith left the band but Roy Williamson and Ronnie Browne continued as a duo until Williamson's death in 1990. They are particularly known for the song " Flower of Scotland", written by Williamson, which has become an unofficial national anthem of Scotland. Andrew Stewart MBE (30 December 1933 – 11 October 1993) was a Scottish singer and entertainer. He presented the BBC TV variety show '' The White Heather Club'' throughout the 1960s, and his song " Donald Where's Your Troosers?" was a hit in both 1960 and 1989. Glasgow Orpheus Choir
The Glasgow Orpheus Choir was founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1906 by Hugh S. Roberton. It originated in the Toynbee Musical Association, which had been created in 1901. The Glasgow Orpheus Choir came to be considered without peer in Britain, and it toured widely while enjoying world acclaim. Roberton expected the highest standards of performance from its members. Its voice was a choir voice, its individual voices not tolerated. He set new standards in choral technique and interpretation. Their repertoire included many Scottish folk songs arranged for choral performance, and paraphrases, as well as Italian madrigals, English motets and the music of the Russian Orthodox Church. The choir also performed the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Felix Mendelssohn, Peter Cornelius, Johannes Brahms and others. Sir Hugh Roberton
Sir Hugh Stevenson Roberton (23 February 18747 October 1952) was a Scottish composer and, as founder of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir, one of Britain's leading choral-masters in the first half of the 20th century. Life Roberton was born in Glasgow, left school at the age of 14 and entered the family business - a funeral directors - which by the age of 21 he was managing. He worked there into the 1930s, devoting most of his spare time to music making.
