Martin Ward Platt
Martin Peter Ward Platt (28 September 1954 – 27 July 2019) was a British neonatologist. He was an expert witness for the prosecution of Angela Cannings, whose conviction was later overturned. He also gave evidence against Donna Anthony, whose conviction was later overturned. He was involved in the prosecution case against Lucy Letby Lucy Letby (born 4 January 1990) is a British former neonatal nurse who was convicted of the murders of seven infants and the attempted murders of seven others between June 2015 and June 2016. Neonatology
Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practised in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn infants who are ill or require special medical care due to prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital malformations ( birth defects), sepsis, pulmonary hypoplasia, or birth asphyxia. Angela Cannings
Angela Cannings was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the UK in 2002 for the murder of her seven-week-old son, Jason, who died in 1991, and of her 18-week-old son Matthew, who died in 1999. Her first child, Gemma, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in 1989 at the age of 13 weeks, although she was never charged in connection with Gemma's death. Her conviction was based on claims that she had smothered the children, but was overturned as unsafe by the Court of Appeal on 10 December 2003. Cannings was convicted after the testimony of Professor Sir Roy Meadow, a paediatrician who was later struck off, then reinstated, by the General Medical Council. Donna Anthony
Donna Anthony is a British woman from Somerset who was jailed in 1998 after being convicted of the murder of her two babies. She was cleared and freed after having spent more than six years in prison. She was one of several women at the centre of high-profile cases where evidence given by the controversial paediatrician Roy Meadow, Professor Sir Roy Meadow led to convictions of mothers who reported more than one cot death. Lucy Letby
Lucy Letby (born 4 January 1990) is a British former neonatal nurse who was convicted of the murders of seven infants and the attempted murders of seven others between June 2015 and June 2016. Letby came under investigation following a high number of unexpected infant deaths which occurred at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital three years after she began working there. Letby was charged in November 2020 with seven counts of murder and fifteen counts of attempted murder in relation to seventeen babies. She pleaded not guilty. Prosecution evidence included Letby's presence at a high number of deaths, two abnormal blood test results and skin discolouration interpreted as diagnostic of insulin poisoning and air embolism, inconsistencies in medical records, her removal of nursing handover sheets from the hospital, and her behaviour and communications, including handwritten notes interpreted as a confession.
