Martin Lee (singer)
Martin Lee (born Martin Barnes, 26 November 1946 – 29 September 2024) was an English singer-songwriter, best known as a member of the pop group Brotherhood of Man. Lee was brought into Brotherhood of Man along with Lee Sheriden, Sandra Stevens, and Nicky Stevens by band manager Tony Hiller in 1972, when its original line up split up to pursue different music careers. The new version won the Eurovision Song Contest 1976 with their song "Save Your Kisses For Me". As well as a guitarist, Lee was the main lead vocalist for the group. He married Brotherhood of Man member Sandra Stevens. Early years Born in Purley, London as Martin Barnes, he spent five years of his early life in Australia. Purley is an area of the London Borough of Croydon in London, England, south of Charing Cross, with a history going back at least 800 years. "Figaro" is a song by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. It was released as a single in January 1978 and became the group's third and final number one hit in the UK. Background By 1978, Brotherhood of Man had experienced a certain amount of chart success in both the UK and Europe, notably so with " Save Your Kisses For Me" and " Angelo". Following this, came the failure of their next single "Highwayman" (released in late 1977). In January 1978, they released this song, which borrowed the title-idea from their previous No.1 "Angelo". The song became a No.1 hit in February, spending one week on top of the charts in the UK and becoming one of the twenty best selling singles of the year. "Rock Bottom" was the entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1977, performed in English by Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran. It was also written and produced by de Paul and Moran and released on the Polydor record label. Michael Moran (born 4 March 1948) is an English musician, songwriter, composer and record producer. Early life and education Moran was born 4 March 1948 in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Moran studied at the Royal College of Music in London prior to becoming a session musician and a composer and arranger. He is also a supporter of Leeds United. Lynsey de Paul (born Lyndsey Monckton Rubin; 11 June 1948 – 1 October 2014) was an English singer-songwriter and record producer. After initially writing hits for others, she had her own chart hits in the UK and Europe in the 1970s, starting with UK top 10 single " Sugar Me", and became the first British female artist to achieve a number one with a self-written song (in 1972 in Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands). The Shadows (originally known as the Drifters between 1958 and 1959) were an English instrumental rock group, who dominated the British popular music charts in the pre-Beatles era from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.
