Martin Burleigh
Martin Stewart Burleigh (2 February 1951 – 27 September 2021) was an English professional footballer who made 222 appearances in the Football League playing as a goalkeeper for Newcastle United, Darlington, Carlisle United and Hartlepool United. Life and career Burleigh was born in Willington, County Durham. He played football for his local club, Willington A.F.C., before joining Newcastle United as a 17-year-old on amateur forms in October 1968. He replaced the injured Dave Clarke in a strong Newcastle team for Barrie Thomas's testimonial match in November, and turned professional in December. Burleigh was a member of the Newcastle United youth team that won the 1969 Rotterdam International Youth Tournament, defeating Arsenal's youngsters in the final. He made his first-team debut on 26 December 1970, in a 3–0 defeat away to Leeds United in the First Division, and Leeds' manager, Don Revie, was complimentary: "I thought he had a fine game. Willington, County Durham
Willington is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Greater Willington, in County Durham and the ceremonial county of Durham, England. Willington stands in the foothills of the Pennines and near the River Wear close to Crook, Bishop Auckland and Durham. Like many communities in the area Willington's economy was largely based on coal mining. The closure of the colliery in 1967 therefore affected the local economy. Carlisle United
Carlisle United Football Club ( , ) is a professional association football club based in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. The team currently compete in the National League, the fifth level of the English football league system. They have played their home games at Brunton Park since 1909. Retain And Transfer System
The retain and transfer system was a restriction that existed in England from 1893 until 1963 on the freedom of professional association football players to transfer from one Football League club to another. The system remained in place until the High Court ruled in 1963 that it was an unjustifiable restraint of trade. Joe Harvey (footballer)
Joseph Harvey (11 June 1918 – 24 February 1989) was an English football player and manager. He spent much of his career at Newcastle United; he was the club's longest serving captain, manager, and, until 2025, the last to win a major trophy. Playing career Harvey began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 1936. At Wolves Harvey made no appearances and moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, were Harvey went on to make 37 appearances in the 1937–38 season. Harvey was then released by Bournemouth and he signed for Bradford City in 1938. At the outbreak of World War 2 Harvey joined the Royal Artillery going on to become a sergeant-major in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps. Mick Channon
Michael Roger Channon (born 28 November 1948) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward and represented the England national team in the 1970s. Scoring over 250 goals in his career, mainly for Southampton, he became known for his trademark windmill goal celebration. Channon later became a successful racehorse trainer.
