Martin Barras
Martin Barras (born 23 February 1962 in Quebec) is a French-Canadian cycling coach who has coached British and Australian Olympic teams. Barras was employed as a track cycling coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport from 1995 to 1998 where he coached Ryan Bayley. In 1999, he was appointed coach with Great Britain's sprint cycling program and his athletes - won gold (Jason Queally) and silver medals (team sprint) at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2001, he was appointed Australian Institute of Sport / Cycling Australia track sprint coach. He had a very successful 2004 Athens Olympics with Ryan Bayley winning two gold medals, Anna Meares one gold medal and one bronze medal and Shane Kelly winning a bronze medal. Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) was opened in 1981. AIS Sports Star of the Year (later named AIS Athlete of the Year) was first established in 1983/84 with the first winner being swimmer Karen Phillips. In 1995, AIS Junior Athlete of the Year was established. Other major awards include AIS Team of The Year, AIS Coach of the Year and AIS Program of the Year. Western Australian Institute Of Sport
The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) is an elite sports institute set up in 1983 by the Government of Western Australia to support athletes in Western Australia. Previously, if elite athletes from Western Australian needed to train or receive coaching at an international level they had to move to one of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) campuses which were generally based in the eastern states. The founding director was Wally Foreman who held the position for 17 years until 2001. The institute is based at the WAIS High Performance Service Centre (next door to HBF Stadium) and has sport programs including athletics, baseball, canoeing, cycling, gymnastics, men and women's hockey, netball, rowing, sailing, softball, swimming, and men and women's water polo.
