Marshall University Visual Arts Center (originally known as Anderson Newcomb Co. and Stone & Thomas) is an arts center in Huntington, West Virginia, US, next to Pullman Square. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 under the Downtown Huntington Historic District. History Anderson Newcomb Co. (1902-1980) In 1894, J.W. Valentine opened a dry goods shop in the current day Downtown Huntington Historic District, downtown Huntington. A year later, he partnered with W.H. Newcomb, later naming the store Valentine & Newcomb. After years of rapid growth, in 1902 Valentine & Newcomb opened a three-store building on 3rd Avenue. Five years later in 1907, Valentine sold his shares of the store to E.G. Anderson, which later renamed the store Anderson Newcomb Co. In 1920, after years of reconstruction, the Anderson Newcomb Co. building added three floors to the main building. Almost thirty years later, in 1956 two more stories were added to the building. Stone & Thomas
Stone & Thomas was a United States chain of department stores. Based in Wheeling, West Virginia, the chain had stores located in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The company was bought out in 1998 by Elder-Beerman, an Ohio-based chain of department stores. History Stone and Thomas was founded in 1847 in Wheeling, West Virginia, Wheeling, Virginia by Elijah J. Stone and Jacob C. Thomas. Also referred to as Stone's or "The People's Store", it was a West Virginia institution for 150 years. From its flagship store in downtown Wheeling, it expanded into Huntington in the 1910s, Charleston in 1928, and in most of West Virginia's major cities. In 1956 Stone and Thomas bought out Broida's of Parkersburg, and for a short time it was called Broida's, Stone & Thomas. The chain grew to 19 stores in West Virginia, two in Virginia, one store in Ashland, Kentucky and one store in St Clairsville, Ohio. Stone's was a very teenager-friendly store.
