Marsh Mills
Marsh Mills, also known as Haley's Mill or Spielman Mill, is a historic home located at Fairplay, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is a -story, three-bay-wide limestone house. The structure was built about 1850 as a mill, then converted to a creamery in the 1880s. Traces of the millrace are still visible where it exits the south end of the building and passes beneath the road. Also on the property is an American Foursquare–style frame house which may incorporate remnants of the original log house which served as the original miller's dwelling. Fairplay, Maryland
Fairplay is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 580 as of the 2010 census. It is sometimes recognized, along with neighboring Tilghmanton, as Fairplay-Tilghmanton; the two communities share a post office as well as a fire company. Fairplay is located between Hagerstown and Sharpsburg, along Maryland Route 65 and is part of the Hagerstown Metropolitan Area. Marsh Mills was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. According to tradition, Fairplay was so named on account of the welcoming nature of the first settlers. Limestone ( calcium carbonate ) is a type of carbonate sedimentary rock which is the main source of the material lime. Creamery
A creamery is a place where milk and cream are processed and where butter and cheese is produced. Cream is separated from whole milk; pasteurization is done to the skimmed milk and cream separately. Whole milk for sale has had some cream returned to the skimmed milk. The creamery is the source of butter from a dairy. Cream is an emulsion of fat-in-water; the process of churning causes a phase inversion to butter which is an emulsion of water-in-fat. Excess liquid as buttermilk is drained off in the process. Modern creameries are automatically controlled industries, but the traditional creamery needed skilled workers. Traditional tools included the butter churn and Scotch hands. The American Foursquare or American Four Square is an American house style popular from the mid-1890s to the late 1930s. A reaction to the ornate and mass-produced elements of the Victorian and other Revival styles popular throughout the last half of the 19th century, the American Foursquare was plain, often incorporating handcrafted "honest" woodwork (unless purchased from a mail-order catalog).
