Marsh Improvement Act 1844
The Marsh Improvement Act 1844, also known as the Southampton Improvement Act 1844 is an act of Parliament, giving the Town Council of Southampton more powers within the town. These included increasing sanitation work – like constructing sewers and regulating slaughterhouses, as well as allowing the authority to widen and pave streets. The act also allowed the council to protect common land from development, which allowed the council to turn the Southampton Common into a public park – and set the path for the creation of the Southampton Central Parks. The act allowed for a local rate to be charged at no more than a 'shilling in the pound'. Effect The effect of the legislation was significant, with it giving the Town Council significantly more power. The act also allowed for the area between Southampton Terminus railway station and the Woolston Floating Bridge, which at the time was an undrained marsh to be developed on by the London and Southampton Railway. Southampton Central Parks
The Southampton Central Parks are a set of five parks, which collectively make a central public park, in the heart of the city of Southampton. Created between 1854 and 1866, they have gained Grade II* listed status, as well as being part of the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The parks are legally Common Land. History The land on which the parks now lie can trace their formation back to the medieval period, in which the lands surrounded the developing town of Southampton. As a result, they were used as open fields, where locals had Lammas rights - which allowed burgesses (locals of the town) the right to pasture after the harvest. Southampton Terminus Railway Station
Southampton Terminus railway station served the Port of Southampton and Southampton City Centre, England from 1840 until 1966. The station was authorised on 25 July 1834 and built as the terminus of the London and Southampton Railway, which later changed its name to the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). The station opened as "Southampton" on 11 May 1840 due to the track not being fully linked between Winchester and Basingstoke. The station building was constructed in 1839–40 to the design of Sir William Tite. The LSWR added the much larger South Western Hotel building, designed by John Norton, in 1872. Woolston Floating Bridge
The Woolston Floating Bridge was a cable ferry that crossed the River Itchen in England between hards at Woolston and Southampton from 23 November 1836 until 11 June 1977. It was taken out of service after the new Itchen Bridge was opened. Initially there was one ferry, built and owned by the Floating Bridge Company, increased to two operating side by side in 1881.
