Mars, Chernihiv Oblast
Mars is a village in Ukraine, in Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion, Chernihiv Oblast. It belongs to Semenivka urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. The population is 5 persons; in the early 2000s 30 persons lived in the village. Until 18 July 2020, Mars belonged to Semenivka Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Chernihiv Oblast to five. The area of Semenivka Raion was merged into Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion. Name In 1924, when the planet Mars was in opposition to Earth, the Soviet government decided to give the name "Mars" to this village. Population In the USSR it had a population of 265. By 1995 the total population had decreased and was only 46 people. In the early 2000s this number reduced again to 30, in 2018 to 6, and in 2019 to 5, the members of two families. Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion ( uk, Новгород-Сіверський район) is a raion (district) of Chernihiv Oblast, northern Ukraine. Its administrative centre is located at Novhorod-Siverskyi. Population: On 18 July 2020, as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, the number of raions of Chernihiv Oblast was reduced to five, and the area of Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion was significantly expanded. Two abolished raions, Korop and Semenivka Raions, as well as the city of Novhorod-Siverskyi, which was previously incorporated as a city of oblast significance and did not belong to the raion, were merged into Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion. A hromada ( uk, територіальна громада, lit=territorial community, translit=terytorialna hromada) is a basic unit of administrative division in Ukraine, similar to a municipality. In positional astronomy, two astronomical objects are said to be in opposition when they are on opposite sides of the celestial sphere, as observed from a given body (usually Earth). A planet (or asteroid or comet) is said to be "in opposition" or "at opposition" when it is in opposition to the Sun. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, only being larger than Mercury. In the English language, Mars is named for the Roman god of war.
