Marquita Maytag
Marquita Moseley Maytag (December 4, 1925 – February 15, 2011) was an American heiress who briefly served as the United States ambassador to Nepal from 1976 to 1977. Early life and education Maytag was born in Los Angeles in 1925. The heiress to the Maytag fortune, she was raised in Hawaii and Sun Valley, Idaho. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles. Career An influential political operative in California and Idaho, Maytag was a member of the board of directors of the American Conservative Union from 1969 to 1972. She was also the director of the Grand Central Industrial Center and Regency Galleries in Los Angeles. Maytag was instrumental in switching Idaho delegates from Ronald Reagan to Gerald Ford at the 1976 Republican National Convention. The American Conservative Union (ACU) is an American political organization that advocates for conservative policies, ranks politicians based on their level of conservatism, and organizes the Conservative Political Action Conference. The Maytag Corporation is an American home and commercial appliance company owned by Whirlpool Corporation since April 2006. Company history The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 by businessman Frederick Louis Maytag I, Frederick Maytag. In 1925, Maytag Washing Machine Company became Maytag, Inc. Frederick's son Elmer Henry Maytag took over as president of the company from 1926 until his own death in 1940. In the early 1930s, photographer Theodor Horydczak took pictures of the plant and some of its workers. During the Great Depression of the 1930s the company was one of the few to make a profit. In 1938, Maytag provoked Strike action, strikes by the company's workers because of a 10% pay cut. 1976 Republican National Convention
The 1976 Republican National Convention was a United States political convention of the Republican Party that met from August 16 to August 19, 1976, to select the party's nominee for President. Held in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, the convention nominated President Gerald Ford for a full term, but only after narrowly defeating a strong challenge from former California Governor Ronald Reagan. The convention also nominated Senator Bob Dole of Kansas for vice president, instead of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, who did not seek nomination for a full term. The keynote address was delivered by Tennessee Senator Howard Baker. Ronald Wilson Reagan ( ; February 6, 1911June 5, 2004) was an American politician, actor, and union leader who served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He also served as the 33rd governor of California from 1967 to 1975, after having a career in entertainment. Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois. He graduated from Eureka College in 1932 and began to work as a sports announcer in Iowa. In 1937, Reagan moved to California, where he found work as a film actor. Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. ( ; born Leslie Lynch King Jr.; July 14, 1913December 26, 2006) was an American politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from 1974 to 1977. He was the only president never to have been elected to the office of president or vice president as well as the only president to date from Michigan.
