''Marquis'' is a customized 1956 Ford built by Bill Cushenbery in 1963-1965. Built for Gene Boucher, Cushenbery started with a '56 Ford hardtop. It was sectioned , and had almost every body panel reworked, with the hood given an asymmetrical peak; '59 Buick rear quarter panels were also added. Bill Cushenbery
Bill Cushenbery (March 22, 1933 – December 12, 1998) was an American car customizer, show car builder, and model kit designer. Cushenbery was a major influence on the look of custom cars and the customizing industry in general. In addition to building his own designs, he is noted for having helped George Barris create the ''Batmobile'' car featured in the 1966–1968 ''Batman'' television series. History Cushenbery worked in autobody repair shops to learn to do bodywork. Several members of his family were already in the trade and helped train him, but Cushenbery wanted to build new instead of repair damage. Cushenbery started customizing cars in 1947, in a small shop set up in the back of his parents' house behind a service station in Wichita, Kansas. His first custom was a 1948 Frazer coupe. Naugahyde is an American brand of artificial leather. Naugahyde is a composite knit fabric backing and expanded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating. It was developed by Byron A. Hunter, senior chemist at the United States Rubber Company, and is now manufactured and sold by the corporate spin-off Uniroyal Engineered Products, LLC. Its name, first used as a trademark in 1936, comes from the name of Naugatuck, Connecticut, where it was first produced. It is now manufactured in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Uses The primary use for Naugahyde is as a substitute for leather in upholstery. In this application it is very durable and can be easily maintained by wiping with a damp sponge or cloth. Kustom Kulture is a neologism used to describe the artworks, vehicles, hairstyles, and fashions of those who have driven and built custom cars and motorcycles in the United States of America from the 1950s through today. It was born out of the hot rod culture of Southern California of the 1960s. In the early days of hot rodding, many fashions and styles developed. Over time, each of these distinct styles of customizing have blended and reshaped our everyday life.
