''Marooned in Iraq'' ( fa, گمگشتگی در عراق/Gomgashtei dar Aragh, and also known as ''Songs of My Motherland'' fa, آوازهای سرزمین مادریام) is a 2002 Iranian ( Kurdish/Persian) film directed by Bahman Ghobadi and produced in Iran. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Plot Mirza, a famous Kurdish musician, hears that his (ex-)wife, Hanareh, is in trouble. Accompanied by his two sons, he embarks on an adventurous journey across the Iran-Iraq border to find her. Bahman Ghobadi
Bahman Ghobadi ( fa, بهمن قبادی; ; born 1 February 1969 in Baneh, Kurdistan province, Iran) is an Iranian Kurdish film director, producer and writer. He belongs to the " new wave" of Iranian cinema. Biography He was born in Baneh, a Kurdish city in Iran. His family moved to Sanandaj in 1981. Ghobadi received a Bachelor of Arts in film directing from Iran Broadcasting College. After a brief career in industrial photography, Ghobadi began making short 8 mm films. His documentary ''Life in Fog'' won numerous awards. Bahman Ghobadi was assistant director on Abbas Kiarostami's '' The Wind Will Carry Us''. Bahman Ghobadi founded Mij Film in 2000, a company with the aim of production of films in Iran about its different ethnic groups. Kurdish cinema focuses on the Kurdish people and culture. The fate of the Kurds as a people without a state shaped their cinema. Kurdish films often show social grievances, oppression, torture, human rights violations, and life as a stranger. Kurdish cinema has a high significance for the Kurds, as it offers the opportunity to draw attention to their own situation artistically.
