Marlene Sai
Marlene Mikahala Sai (born December 14, 1941) is a Hawaiian classic-style female solo singer, born in Honolulu of Hawaiian–Chinese heritage. The ''San Francisco Chronicle'' refers to Marlene Sai as one of the true icons of the islands. The ''Santa Cruz Sentinel'' refers to Sai as a living legend (person), living legend of Hawaiian music. PBS Hawaii's Leslie Wilcox says of Sai "There are only a handful of true divas in Hawaiian music, women who wrap their powerful voices with grace, elegance and beauty. You can add to the list Marlene Sai." Early years Sai is from Kaimuki, Hawaii, and a product of the Kamehameha Schools, Kamehameha school system. She released her first record in 1959. Sai was taught the basics of singing and mentored by her uncle Andy Cummings, considered another legend of Hawaiian singing and songwriting. ''MidWeek'' is a weekly United States tabloid shopper and advertisement periodical published Wednesday in Honolulu, Hawaii and distributed throughout the Islands of Oahu and Kauai. It is owned by Black Press and is a sister publication of the ''Honolulu Star-Advertiser''. History The shopper started in 1984 to provide advertisers with an alternative way to reach more customers. Publisher Ken Berry helped secure deals with Safeway and Pay ‘n Save to advertise with the fledgling publication. Berry sought out cover stories and columnists that would increase readership. The first issue of ''MidWeek'' was published on July 18, 1984 and featured local newscaster Joe Moore on the cover. The first ''MidWeek'' editor was Cheryl Deep. 1984 to 1987, followed by Vera Benedek, 1987 to 1994, and Don Chapman who joined the newspaper in November 1994.
