Marla F. Frederick
Marla Faye Frederick is an American Ethnography, ethnographer and scholar, with a focus on the African Americans, African American Religion, religious experience. Her work addresses a range of topics including race, gender, religion and media studies. She became the eighteenth Dean of Harvard Divinity School on January 1, 2024. Education Frederick earned a BA in English from Spelman College and in 2000, earned a PhD in cultural anthropology from Duke University. She was a postdoctorate fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University. Career and service Frederick was an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati. She has been a visiting professor at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and at Northwestern University. Ethnography
Ethnography is a branch of anthropology and the systematic study of individual cultures. It explores cultural phenomena from the point of view of the subject of the study. Ethnography is also a type of social research that involves examining the behavior of the participants in a given social situation and understanding the group members' own interpretation of such behavior. As a form of inquiry, ethnography relies heavily on participant observation, where the researcher participates in the setting or with the people being studied, at least in some marginal role, and seeking to document, in detail, patterns of social interaction and the perspectives of participants, and to understand these in their local contexts. It had its origin in social and cultural anthropology in the early twentieth century, but has, since then, spread to other social science disciplines, notably sociology. Carolyn Rouse
Carolyn Moxley Rouse (born ) is an American anthropologist, professor and filmmaker. She is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Princeton University. Biography Rouse grew up in Del Mar, California, the daughter of a physicist (her father, Carl A. Rouse) and a psychologist (her mother, Lorraine). She encountered discrimination at an early age as her family was prevented from buying a home in Rancho Santa Fe because of their race. Rouse attended Swarthmore College, graduating in 1987. In her junior year, she studied abroad in Kenya in a program focused on wildlife biology, but found she was much more interested in the people around her, which prompted a turn toward documentary film, then eventually a master's in visual anthropology and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Southern California.
