Markus Jonsson
Per Markus Jonsson (born 9 March 1981) is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a defender. He played for Öster, AIK, Panionios, and Brann during a club career that spanned between 1999 and 2014. A full international between 2007 and 2009, he won four caps for the Sweden national team. Club career He was born in Växjö, Sweden, and played seven seasons for his hometown team Östers. In November 2005, Jonsson signed for AIK on a free transfer, and managed to out-compete Jimmy Tamandi for the right-back spot at AIK. Impressive play from Jonsson made him frequently named as a contender for said spot in the national team. Växjö ( ) is a city and the seat of Växjö Municipality, Kronoberg County, Sweden. It had 70,489 inhabitants (2019) out of a municipal population of 95,995 (2021). It is the administrative, cultural, and industrial centre of Kronoberg County and the episcopal see of the Diocese of Växjö and the location of Växjö Cathedral. The Sweden national football team has traditionally been a strong team in international football, with twelve World Cup appearances—collecting one silver and two bronze medals—and three medals in the Olympics, including one gold. Svenska Cupen (, ''The Swedish Cup'') is a knockout cup competition in Swedish football and the main Swedish football cup. Svenska Cupen usually refers to the men's tournament, although a women's tournament is also held. Each year 96 teams compete, comprising the 16 teams from Allsvenskan and the 16 teams of Superettan together with 64 teams from lower tiers of the league system. The winners qualify for the qualifying stages of the UEFA Europa League. The winner is awarded Gustaf VI Adolf Cup. Compared to cups in many other countries, Svenska Cupen attracts considerably less public interest and even the cup final is rarely sold out. Consequently, the Swedish Football Association has experimented with the format in order to raise the profile of the cup.
