Markina
Markina-Xemein is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, Bizkaia, in the Basque Autonomous Community, also known as the Basque Country, located in northern Spain. The origin of the town's name lies in its geographic location. The last town in the province of Bizkaia, Markina-Xemein lies between Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. Coming from the Spanish word "marca" meaning "mark", Markina-Xemein marks the location where the Gipuzkoanos (the people of Guipuzcoa province) often battled the Bizkainos (the people of Biscay province). The local economy is mostly based on the primary and secondary sectors, with particular relevance for agriculture and cattle herding, timber research and metal industry. The metal industry has in fact played an important role in the past, through the development of important weapons in the defense industry. 1980 Markina Attack
The 1980 Markina attack was a mass shooting gun attack by the Basque separatist organisation ETA which occurred on 20 September 1980 near the Basque town of Markina ( es, Marquina). The targets were a group of off-duty civil guards who were having lunch in a bar in the town. Four civil guards were killed. The attack was one of the deadliest of 1980, the year when ETA killed more people than any other. Lea-Artibai
Lea-Artibai is an ''eskualdea/comarca'' of the province of Biscay (Bizkaia), in the Basque Country, Spain. Lea-Artibai is the heir of the historical ''merindad'' of Markina, which was one of the ''merindades'' of Biscay. Currently, Lea-Artibai is one of the seven ''comarcas'' that compose the province. Its capital city is Markina-Xemein. Geography Lea-Artibai is located at the northeast extreme of the province. Nicolasa Pradera
Nicolasa Pradera (1870–1959) was a Spanish chef, restaurateur, and is most known for her cookbook "La cocina de Nicolasa" (the Kitchen of Nicolasa), which is one of the staples of Basque cooking. Biography Nicolasa Pradera Mendive was born on 7 December 1870 in Markina-Xemein, of the Basque Country of northern Spain. Between 1890 and 1912, she served as a cook in the Londaur Palace for the Gaytan de Ayala family and after leaving their service opened a restaurant in San Sebastián at #4 Aldamar Street with her husband Narciso Dolhagaray Picabea, a prominent butcher. In 1932, she sold the restaurant and bought another establishment with her sons. She named the restaurant "Andia" and it was located on the Paseo de La Concha. (Walkway of Shells). Ziortza-Bolibar ( es, Cenarruza-Puebla de Bolívar) is a municipality in the province of Biscay, Basque Country ( Spain), in the comarca of Lea-Artibai. It has 383 inhabitants according to the 2006 census, and has an area of 18.94 km². The municipality was annexed in 1969 by Markina-Xemein and recovered its independence on January 1, 2005. Elizate
An (), ( es, anteiglesia) is an early form of local government in the Basque Country which was particularly common in Biscay but also existed in the other provinces. The terms (in Standard Basque) and (in Biscayan) literally translate as "church door" ( "church" + "door"). The Spanish term translates as "before hechurch" or "parvise". The peculiar name derives from the Basque custom where the family heads of a settlement connected to a particular parish would gather after mass at the entrance or portico of the church to make decisions regarding issues affecting their community.
