Market Square (Ivano-Frankivsk)
Market Square in Ivano-Frankivsk is called Ploshcha Rynok ( uk, Площа Ринок) and is historically the central square of the city. It is the oldest square and traces its history to the city's establishment. The main feature of the square is the former city hall, Ratusha, which today serves as the building of the Museum of regional studies. Composition The square is rectangular in shape with one major street running through its western side, the Halych Street. Halych Street is one of the major transportation arteries of the city and is part of the (National Route 9). On the east edge stretches the Street of Sheremety which starts at Shpytalna Street (just northeast of the square) and connects the Market Square with Mickewicz Square. The southern edge was part of the September 17th Street, but after the fall of the Soviet Union the street was ''"annexed"'' to the Market Square. Ratusha, Ivano-Frankivsk ( uk, Івано-Франківська ратуша, pl, Ratusz) is a several stories-tall building in the downtown (Old Town) of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk which formerly served as the town hall (''Rathaus'' in German and ratusz in Polish, hence the name) and now houses the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional History, Crafts and Culture Museum and an observation deck. It is located in the center, at the city's Market Square (Ploshcha Rynok in Ukrainian). It is the only town hall in Ukraine built in the Art Deco style (part of the ''Modern Style''). The current design was created in the 1920s by Polish architect Stanisław Trela, while the original building was built when the city was founded, in the 17th century. Halych ( uk, Га́лич ; ro, Halici; pl, Halicz; russian: Га́лич, Galich; german: Halytsch, ''Halitsch'' or ''Galitsch''; yi, העליטש) is a historic city on the Dniester River in western Ukraine. Street of Strachenykh ( uk, Вулиця Страчених) is a street located in the Ivano-Frankivsk old town between old town hall (Ratusha) and new city administration building Bily Dim. It is one of several small streets that lead to the city's rathaus. During the Soviet times the street carried the name of Tobilevych after the Ukrainian play writer Ivan Tobilevych better known as Ivan Karpenko-Karyi. Since 1992 it was renamed into street of Stratchenykh (literally - street of Executed) to commemorate the 15 people who were executed by Gestapo in front of the city's synagogue in accusation of being the members of Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Mykhailo Hrushevsky Street ( uk, Вулиця Грушевського) is one of the most important streets located in Ivano-Frankivsk. It runs along several government institutions such as regional and city administration ''Bily Dim'' as well as the city's branch of the National Bank of Ukraine.
