Markdale
Markdale is a community in the Municipality of Grey Highlands, in Grey County, Ontario, Canada. The population was 1,216 in 2016, an increase of 3.5% from 1,175 in 2011. In 2016, the average age of the population was approximately 43 years old. History Markdale was first settled in 1846 and originally called East Glenelg, after a nearby township. In 1864, it was renamed Cornabus after the Scottish hometown, Islay, of the postmaster, Donald MacDuffie (1814–1892). The post office was established in 1869. In the 1870s, new railways were a vital economic engine for small Ontario towns, as evidenced by nearby Flesherton, which had failed to prosper after the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway decided to bypass it. In 1873, the same railway wanted to make Cornabus a stop on its route from Toronto to Owen Sound if it could find land on which to build a station. The Markdale Standard
The ''Markdale Standard'' was a newspaper in Markdale, Ontario, in Grey County Canada from 1880 until 2012. The paper was continuously published for 132 years with a circulation of 1,300. The paper was known for its longevity and outlasting its peers, in 1880 there were 16 local newspapers in Grey County, but by 1920 only one remained, ''The Markdale Standard''. History The Markdale Expositor The newspaper began operating under the name of the ''Markdale Expositor''. The paper was started on October 29, 1875 under editor George Jackson Blyth. Born in 1845, Blyth would publish the ''Expositor'' until 1880, and five years started up the ''Chatsworth News'' on March 12, 1885. He was a member of the International organization of Good Templars, as a District Lecturer regarding the Temperance movement. Blyth died on January 19, 1908, having suffered a stroke June of the previous year, and buried in St. Paul's Anglican cemetery. His daughter Edith would continue to manage the paper. ... Markdale Majors
The Markdale Majors were a Canadian Intermediate (Senior) team from the town of Markdale, Ontario. An entry which competed in the Central Ontario Hockey League, later swallowed by the WOAA Senior Hockey League. History The Markdale Majors were the final champions in COHL history. In 1982, as a member of the WOAA, the COHL final was played between Markdale and Hillsburgh, Markdale came out on top. They were league finalists in 1980 and 1981, losing out to Dundalk and Honeywood respectively. The Wiarton Rock was a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based in Wiarton, Ontario, and a member of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL). The Rock relocated multiple times, spending time in King City, Nobleton, Lefroy, and Markdale, Ontario. History The King Wild's first game was the first game in the GMHL's history taking place on September 8, 2006, against the Richmond Hill Rams in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The Wild lost 6-0 to the Rams despite outshooting them. The Wild's first victory was a 5-1 decision over the Toronto Canada Moose on September 9, 2006. Grey Highlands, Ontario
Grey Highlands is a municipality in the southeast corner of Grey County, Ontario, Canada that was formed on January 1, 2001, by the amalgamation of the village of Markdale and the townships of Artemesia, Euphrasia and Osprey, which included the unincorporated hamlets of Eugenia, Ceylon, Maxwell, Singhampton, Priceville, Kimberley, Badjeros and Feversham. The former village of Flesherton is also located within the municipality; it was amalgamated with Artemesia Township in 1998. According to the 2016 Census, the municipality covers a land area of 882 square kilometres and has a population of 9,804. Chapman's
Chapman's is a Canadian manufacturer of ice cream. It is the largest independent ice cream and ice water manufacturer in Canada. Chapman's produces products under the company brand name, as well as store brand products. They are also known for their range of ice creams for people with special dietary needs. Chapman's products are distributed nationally. The company was founded by David and Penny Chapman in 1973. Their son, Ashley, currently runs the business. History In 1973, David and Penny Chapman purchased the Creamery in Markdale, Ontario, a village just south of Georgian Bay. The company started out as a small creamery with four employees and two trucks. In 2001, a distribution center was opened in New Brunswick to better serve Chapman's Atlantic Canada. ''Wolf Dog'', also known as ''A Boy and His Dog'', is a 1958 Western film directed and produced by Sam Newfield and produced by Regal Films. The film stars Jim Davis and Allison Hayes. Cast *Jim Davis Production In August 1957, Newfield and a camera crew filmed the movie in and around Markdale, Ontario, near Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. The movie co-starred Hollywood actors Jim Davis, Allison Hayes and John Hart along with Canadian actors Austin Willis and Tony Brown. Several locals were offered a chance to be unpaid "extras". Grey County is a county of the Canadian province of Ontario. The county seat is in Owen Sound. It is located in the subregion of Southern Ontario named Southwestern Ontario. Flesherton
Flesherton (population 584) is a community in the Municipality of Grey Highlands, in Grey County, Ontario, Canada, located at the junction of Highway 10 and Grey County Road 4 (formerly Highway 4). Although the area initially showed a high rate of growth in the 1850s and its founder believed that it would become an important centre of economic activity, growth stagnated when an all-important rail link bypassed it, and the community never grew larger than a small village. The self-proclaimed "Gateway to the Beaver Valley" recently lost its autonomy as a village when it was amalgamated with the surrounding Artemesia Township. The Southern Ontario Tornado Outbreak of 2009 was a series of severe thunderstorms that spawned numerous tornadoes in Southwestern Ontario, Central Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) on August 20, 2009, and was the largest single-day tornado outbreak in Ontario history and the largest in Canadian history. During the afternoon and evening, 19 tornadoes touched down with four of them producing F2 damage. One F2 struck the town of Durham where significant damage occurred and one person was killed; two F2s struck the city of Vaughan, just north of Toronto, damaging hundreds of homes; another F2 devastated apple orchards and resort areas near Thornbury. The number of tornadoes associated with this event surpasses that of August 2, 2006, which saw 18 documented tornadoes. Area Code 226
Area codes 519, 226 and 548 are the telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for most of southwestern Ontario. Area code 519 was created in 1953 by a split of two numbering plan areas (NPAs), from the western portion of 416 and the southwestern portion of 613. In 1957, parts of 519 and 613 formed area code 705. 519 is mostly bounded by area code 905, except for Simcoe County which is bordered by 705.
