Mark Van Loosdrecht
Mark van Loosdrecht (born 1959) is a Dutch professor in environmental biotechnology at Delft University of Technology. He was the creator of Nereda, a wastewater treatment technology developed by a cooperation between the Delft University of Technology, the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA) and Royal HaskoningDHV. Life and career Van Loosdrecht was born in Loon op Zand in 1959. He studied environmental hygiene at Wageningen University and Research and obtained his PhD in 1988. He became a professor at Delft University of Technology in 1999. Van Loosdrecht is chief editor of the scientific journal ''Water Research''. Awards and honours Van Loosdrecht was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. The Stockholm Water Prize is an annual award that recognizes outstanding achievements in water related activities. Over the past three decades, Stockholm Water Prize Laureates have come from across the world and represented a wide range of professions, disciplines and activities in the field of water. Resource Recovery
Resource recovery is using wastes as an input material to create valuable products as new outputs. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste generated, thereby reducing the need for landfill space, and optimising the values created from waste. Resource recovery delays the need to use raw materials in the manufacturing process. Materials found in municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste, commercial waste and industrial wastes can be used to recover resources for the manufacturing of new materials and products. Plastic, paper, aluminium, glass and metal are examples of where value can be found in waste. Resource recovery goes further than just the management of waste.
