Mark Naylor
Mark Naylor (born 10 September 1957) is a retired male high jumper from England. he competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics. Biography Naylor was a member of Hillingdon Athletic Club during his career and finished second behind Alan Dainton in the high jump event at the 1977 AAA Championships. He represented England in the high jump event, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. At the 1980 Olympics Games in Moscow, he represented Great Britain and shortly afterwards finished second behind Carlo Thränhardt at the 1980 AAA Championships but by virtue of being the highest placed British athlete was considered the British high jump champion. Naylor set his personal best (2.24 metres) in 1980. Naylor was British champion again in 1981 after another second place behind a non-British athlete in James Frazier of the United States. The UK Athletics Championships was an annual national championship in track and field for the United Kingdom, organised by the British Athletics Federation. The event incorporated the 1980 Olympic trials for the British Olympic team. The venue for the event was rotational and designed to be inclusive – all four Home Nations hosted the event during its twenty-year existence, as well as several areas of England. Created in 1977 and open only to British athletes, the event was initiated to provide an alternative to the AAA Championships, which was open to foreign athletes and was organised by an English amateur organisation. British athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. 337 competitors, 229 men and 108 women, took part in 190 events in 20 sports. The British team won a total of 37 medals, including five golds, this was Britain's largest total medal haul since 1920, and would not be surpassed until 2008, however this was due in part to the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Olympics, which meant that Eastern Bloc competitors were not present.
