Mark Irwin (poet)
Mark Irwin (born 1952) is an American poet and the author of twelve collections of poetry, most recently ''Once When Green'' (University of Massachusetts Press). He lives in Los Angeles and the mountains of rural Colorado. His honors and awards include the Juniper Prize for Poetry, the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry, the Test Site Poetry Prize, the Nation/Discovery Award, four Pushcart Prizes, a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship, Colorado and Ohio Art Council Fellowships, two Colorado Book Awards, the James Wright Poetry Award, and fellowships from the Fulbright, Lilly, and Wurlitzer Foundations. Career Irwin attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop (MFA, 1980) and Case Western Reserve University (PhD, 1982). Iowa Writers' Workshop
The Iowa Writers' Workshop, at the University of Iowa, is a graduate-level creative writing program. At 89 years, it is the oldest writing program offering a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in the United States. Its acceptance rate is between 2.7% and 3.7%. On the university's behalf, the workshop administers the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism and the Iowa Short Fiction Award. The workshop's director is the writer Lan Samantha Chang, under whom its endowment has grown from $2.6 million to $12.5 million. History In 1897, theater producer George Cram Cook began teaching a class called "Verse-Making", effectively the University of Iowa's first creative writing class. Wesleyan University Press is a university press that is part of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The press is currently directed by Suzanna Tamminen, a published poet and essayist.
