Mark Dornford-May
Mark Anthony Dornford-May (born 29 September 1955) is a British theatre and film director, now based in South Africa. Personal life Mark Dornford-May was born near Eastoft in Yorkshire. His mother was a school teacher, and his father the Drama Adviser for Cheshire County Council, receiving an MBE for services to theatre in the 1980s. In 2002 he married South African actress and singer Pauline Malefane, and together they have three children (Dornford-May also has a daughter from an earlier marriage). In 2004 he became a permanent resident of South Africa and in 2007 he was officially inducted into the Sotho clan of his wife's family. Fred Khumalo (born 4 August 1966) is a South African journalist and author. His books encompass various genres, including novels, non-fiction, memoir and short stories. Among awards he has received are the European Union Literary Award, the Alan Paton Award and the Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award. His writing has appeared in various publications, including the ''Sunday Times'', ''Toronto Star'', '' New African'', '' The Sowetan'' and '' Isolezwe''. ''U-Carmen eKhayelitsha'' is a 2005 South African operatic film directed and produced by Mark Dornford-May. The title, "Carmen in Khayelitsha", refers to one of the poorest areas of Cape Town. Production The movie is a modern remake of Bizet's 1875 opera ''Carmen''. It was shot entirely in Xhosa, and combines both music from the original opera with traditional African music conducted and directed by the British conductor Charles Hazlewood. It takes place in the Cape Town township of Khayelitsha. ''U-Carmen'' was translated into Xhosa by Andiswa Kedama and Pauline Malefane, who also play Amanda and Carmen in the movie, respectively. The cast rehearsed for four weeks before they began shooting the film. The film's musical numbers were recorded live on the set without any additional dubbing. Fugard Theatre
The District Six Homecoming Center, formerly the Fugard Theater, is a small theater in Cape Town, South Africa. It was opened in the District Six suburb in February 2010. The theater closed in March 2021 and was handed over to the District Six Museum by its founder Eric Abraham (producer), Eric Abraham.
