Mark Andrew Smith
Mark Andrew Smith (born July 24th, 1979) is an American comic book author and graphic novelist. Early life and education Smith attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied film. He graduated in 2002. Smith received his Master's Degree in TESOL from SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro Vermont in 2017. Career Out of college, Smith's first job was as a production assistant on season one of American Idol. His first entry into the comic book world came in 2004 when Smith and Dan Hipp were picked up by Image Comics. Image Comics would go on to publish their work, ''The Amazing Joy Buzzards''. Smith is also the co-creator and editor of the Popgun Comics anthology. Smith wrote the original graphic novel Aqua Leung, published in April 2008. Aqua Leung was nominated for a Yalsa award for best graphic novel for teens. Popgun (comics)
''Popgun'' is a comics anthology series created by Mark Andrew Smith and Joe Keatinge. It was published by American company Image Comics in four volumes, between 2007 and 2010. The driving concept behind ''Popgun'' was a mixtape of graphic short stories that cross the borders of all genres. No theme was given to contributors and instead emphasis is placed on diversity of content and the mixing/track order of each volume. ''Popgun'' featured many well-known creators as well as showcased brand-new talent who were not widely known at the time. Many creators debuting in ''Popgun'' have since made their mark on the comics industry. ''Popgun'' twice won the Harvey Award for best anthology, and won the Eisner Award for Best Anthology in 2010. A graphic novel is a long-form, fictional work of sequential art. The term ''graphic novel'' is often applied broadly, including fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work, though this practice is highly contested by comic scholars and industry professionals. Maneki Neko Books
Maneki is a Japanese restaurant in the Japantown area of the International District in Seattle, Washington that opened in 1904 as the first sushi bar in the city. Some claim it is the oldest Asian restaurant on the West Coast of the United States, and it is recognized as one of the oldest sushi restaurants in the United States. History The restaurant is named after the Maneki-neko. When the restaurant first opened in 1904, it was shaped like a Japanese castle and employees wore kimono. The space could seat up to five hundred customers. Tokuji Sato purchased the restaurant in 1923. After the Attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which resulted in the internment of Japanese Americans. Since each family was only allowed to take one suitcase of belongings, much of the restaurant was moved to storage during this time.
