Marjorie Wallace
Marjorie Wallace (born January 23, 1954) is an American actress, television host, model and beauty queen. In 1973, she made history as the first woman from the United States to be crowned Miss World, but just 104 days later, pageant officials announced she would be the first Miss World to have her title taken from her for having an affair. Years later, she helped launch the television program '' Entertainment Tonight'' as an original co-host. Early life Wallace was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where her family ran an industrial supply business and raised her in the suburbs, she told ''People'' magazine. With Indianapolis having a population of about 740,000 in 1970, "dancing at the Holiday Inn was the biggest thing in town," she joked. Miss World 1973, the 23rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 23 November 1973 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, United Kingdom. 54 delegates vied for the crown won by Marjorie Wallace of United States. She was crowned by Belinda Green of Australia. Wallace won $7,200 in prize money for the first-place result. 104 days after her reign, Marjorie Wallace was dethroned from her title. The Miss World 1973 title and duties was not offered to any of the other participants. 1st Runner-Up Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines pre-empted this decision by declaring she did not want the 'second hand crown'. Glutethimide is a hypnotic sedative that was introduced by Ciba in 1954 as a safe alternative to barbiturates to treat insomnia. Before long, however, it had become clear that glutethimide was just as likely to cause addiction and caused similar withdrawal symptoms. Doriden was the brand-name version. Current production levels in the United States (the annual quota for manufacturing imposed by the DEA has been three grams, enough for six Doriden tablets, for a number of years) point to its use only in small-scale research. Patricia Teresa Yuen Leung (born 1952) is a Jamaican designer and beauty pageant titleholder. She was Miss Jamaica World 1973, and the second runner-up in the Miss World pageant that same year. Early life Yuen was born to a Hakka Chinese Jamaican family in Kingston. She began playing tennis while in school. She studied marketing management in Miami, Florida. In 1973, she was 21 years old and working as a salesgirl. Pageant wins Yuen entered the Miss Jamaica pageant that year, breaking an "informal colour line" which had seen women of Chinese descent voluntarily restricting themselves from participation in such events.
