Marjorie Stewart (actor)
Marjorie Frances Esclairmonde Stewart (Lady Marling) (18 May 19129 November 1988) was a British actress and a member of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II. Early life and career Stewart was born on 18 May 1912 in Kensington, London, the daughter of Sir Frances Stewart. She started her acting career at a young age and by the age of five, made her theatrical debut and continued to perform in various West End plays. Her early exposure to the stage set the foundation for her later career in acting. World War II service In 1939, Stewart's career took a pivotal turn when she joined the SOE. Special Operations Executive
Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a British organisation formed in 1940 to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in German-occupied Europe and to aid local Resistance during World War II, resistance movements during World War II. SOE personnel operated in all territories occupied or attacked by the Axis powers, except where demarcation lines were agreed upon with Britain's principal Allies of World War II, Allies, the United States and the Soviet Union. SOE made use of neutral territory on occasion, or made plans and preparations in case neutral countries were attacked by the Axis. The organisation directly employed or controlled more than 13,000 people, of whom 3,200 were women. Both men and women served as agents in Axis-occupied countries. Operation Postmaster
Operation Postmaster was a British special operation conducted on the Spanish island of Fernando Po, now known as Bioko, off West Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, during the Second World War. The mission was carried out by the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in January 1942. Their objective was to board the Italian and German ships in the harbour and sail them to Lagos. The SSRF under the command of Major Gus March-Phillipps left Britain in August 1941 and sailed the Brixham trawler, ''Maid Honor'', to the Spanish colony. The British authorities in the area refused to support the raid, which they considered a breach of Spanish neutrality. Permission for the operation to go ahead eventually came from the Foreign Office in London. Gustavus Henry March-Phillipps, (1908 – 12 September 1942; sometimes spelled "March-Phillips") was the founder of the British Army's No. 62 Commando, also known as Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF), one of the forerunners of the Special Air Service (SAS). He was also noteworthy as being one of Ian Fleming's main inspirations for the character of James Bond. Military career March-Phillipps was a special operations veteran who proved remarkably successful in his missions.
