Marjorie Simpson (architect)
Marjorie Constance (White) Simpson (17 June 1924 - 27 January 2003) was an Australian architect, the first female Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in South Australia, awarded in 1993 for her extensive contribution to architecture. Early life Born Marjorie Constance White in New South Wales on 17 June 1924, she was daughter to an architect Charles Arthur Mortimer White, and younger sister to architect, A.G.M. White (b.1914). In 1941, at the age of 17, she enrolled in the (non-diploma) architectural course at Sydney Technical College. During her 6 years of study she worked on several architectural projects with her mentor Eric M. Nicholls, including a small factory for Coty's Cosmetics, a Manly coffee shop, a baby health clinic and several houses. Career Marjorie White became a registered architect in New South Wales in 1949. Sydney Technical College
The Sydney Technical College, now part of TAFE NSW, is a technical school established in 1878, that superseded the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. The college is one of Australia's oldest technical education institutions. History The Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts was founded in 1833. In 1878, the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts formed the Working Men's College, which eventually became the Sydney Technical College in 1882. In 1911, the high school operations of the college became Sydney Technical High School. In 1923 Mary Ellen Roberts, who had become a teacher of scientific dresscutting and making at the college in 1900, managed the transfer the courses of women's handicrafts to the East Sydney Technical College. RAAF Woomera Range Complex
The RAAF Woomera Range Complex (WRC) is a major Australian military and civil aerospace facility and operation located in South Australia, approximately north-west of Adelaide. The WRC is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), a Service of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The complex has a land area of or roughly the size of North Korea or Pennsylvania. The airspace above the area is restricted and controlled by the RAAF for safety and security. The WRC is a highly specialised ADF test and evaluation capability operated by the RAAF for the purposes of testing defence materiel. The South Australian Brewing Company, Limited was a brewery located in Thebarton, South Australia, Thebarton, an inner-west suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is a subsidiary of Lion (Australasian company), Lion, which in turn is owned by Kirin Company, Kirin, a Japan-based beverage company. It manufactures West End Draught beer. The company was created in 1888 as the South Australian Brewing, Malting, and Wine and Spirit Company, from an amalgamation of the West End Brewery (Hindley Street), West End Brewery (in Hindley Street, Adelaide city centre), the Kent Town Brewery, and the wine and spirit merchants Ben Rounsevell, Rounsevell & Simms. The University of South Australia is a public research university based in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1991, it is the successor of the former South Australian Institute of Technology. Its main campuses along North Terrace are adjacent to the Australian Space Agency in Lot Fourteen and forms part of the Adelaide BioMed City research precinct.
