Marjorie Morrill
Marjorie Morrill Painter Whiting (née Morrill; March 29, 1908 – November 27, 2009), known during her tennis career as Marjorie 'Midge' Morrill, was an American female tennis player who was ranked #2 in the United States in 1930. From 1928 to 1934, she was ranked in the top 10 four times. Personal life Morrill was the daughter of Joseph Morrill, a Boston lawyer, and Olive Morison Morrill, and lived on Glenridge Road in Dedham, Massachusetts. Joseph Morrill gave land to the Dedham Tennis Club to build courts on the same street. Marjorie Morrill was known to "spend hours every day hitting the ball against the backboard there." Morrill was married to Whitfield Painter for 42 years and had three children with him: Nancy, Margot, and Whitfield, Jr. The Painter family moved frequently around the U.S. to accommodate Mr. Painter's sales job with Plymouth Cordage. Menton (; , written ''Menton'' in classical norm or ''Mentan'' in Mistralian norm; it, Mentone ) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region on the French Riviera, close to the Italian border. Menton has always been a frontier town. Since the end of the 14th century, it was on the border between County of Nice, held by the Duke of Savoy, and Republic of Genoa. Sarah Hammond Palfrey Danzig (née Palfrey; September 18, 1912 – February 27, 1996) was an American tennis player whose adult amateur career spanned 19 years, from June 1926 until September 1945. She won two singles, nine women's doubles, and four mixed doubles titles at the U.S. National Championships. Career She was 32 years old, married to Elwood Cooke, and a mother in 1945 when she won her second singles title at the U.S. National Championships. Pauline Betz was her opponent in the final. Since she lost to Cooke in the 1941 final, Betz had won three consecutive titles and 19 consecutive matches at these championships. In 1945, Cooke lost the first set and squandered her 5–2 lead in the second set before recovering to win it 8–6.
