Marist University is a private university in Poughkeepsie (town), New York, Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. Marist was founded by the Marist Brothers, a Catholic Church, Catholic religious institute, in 1905 to prepare brothers for their vocations as educators. In 1929, Marist became accredited by the state to offer a wider range of degrees in the arts and sciences. Marist's 180-acre main campus overlooks the Hudson River. Marist has a branch campus in Florence, Italy. A member of NCAA Division I, Marist sponsors 23 collegiate sports. In 2003 the Catholic Church declared Marist a secular institution. Edward Bech
Edward Bech (May 4, 1812 – July 9, 1873) was a Danish diplomat and businessman who lived in the United States. His former home is now part of Marist College. Early life Bech was born on May 4, 1812, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a son of Ellen Sophie Magdalene (née Meyer) Bech (1784–1846) and Jørgen Peter Valbygård#The Bech family, Bech (1782–1846), a prosperous Copenhagen merchant and friend of Crown Prince Frederick VI of Denmark, Frederick.The family lived at Nybrogade 24 (until 1816 in a now demolished building at Nybrogade 22, No. 22) and had an estate south of Copenhagen, near the border in territory that was later absorbed into Germany.
