Marisa Marquez
Marisa Marquez is a former Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, having served from 2009 until 2017. She did not seek re-election in 2016. In 2008, Marquez unseated Paul Moreno, the longest-serving Latino elected official in the United States. Moreno was considered the Conscience of the House for his tenure, over 40 years, and his outspoken personality. Marquez became the first woman ever to represent District 77 in the Texas House of Representatives and the second Latina ever elected from El Paso, Texas. She was also the first female Latino to serve on the Education Subcommittee of Appropriations and the first El Pasoan since 1958. During her appointment to the House Appropriations Committee, 83rd and 84th Legislative Session, she was the only Hispanic female on the Appropriations or Senate Finance Committee(s). Paul Moreno
Pablo (Paul) Cruz Moreno (April 28, 1931 – September 1, 2017) was State Representative for the 77th District of El Paso, Texas, USA. Early life and education He was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico but raised in El Paso's El Segundo Barrio, and after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the Korean War. He received his BBA from the University of Texas at El Paso, and attended but did not complete his JD from the University of Texas at Austin. Career Moreno was first elected to the Texas House in 1967 and served for 40 years, becoming the "conscience" of the body. He was the longest-serving Hispanic elected official in the United States, and presided as the Dean of the Texas House. Moreno co-founded the Mexican American Legislative Caucus of the Texas House of Representatives, a co-founder of El Paso Legal Assistance, and a founding member of the Tejano Democrats. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to alleviate poverty. President John F. Kennedy originated the idea for VISTA, which was founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993. VISTA is an acronym for Volunteers in Service to America. On March 11, 2018, President Donald Trump sent his official Fiscal Year 2020 (FY 2020) Budget request to Congress.
