Marion Leonard
Marion Leonard (June 9, 1881 – January 9, 1956) was an American stage actress who became one of the first motion picture celebrities in the early years of the silent film era. Early career Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Marion Leonard began her acting career in live theatre, but at the age of 27 she started performing in the rapidly expanding film industry. She signed a contract in 1908 with the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company and initially worked at that studio's production facilities in New York City, which were then located at 11 East, 14th Street in Manhattan. There she made her screen debut in ''At the Crossroads of Life'', a short directed by Wallace McCutcheon, Jr. and written by D. W. Griffith, who also acted in that film and directed the vast majority of Leonard's other films at Biograph. Shortly after her screen debut, Leonard became one of the company's leading "photoplayers". Gem Motion Picture Company was an American silent-era film studio. It was co-founded by filmmaker Stanner E.V. Taylor and his wife, actress Marion Leonard in 1911. After management issues, the company evolved to primarily act as a producer of short comedies starring Billy Quirk. Distribution Gem film properties produced by Taylor and Leonard were sold to the Rex Motion Picture Company, which released them in 1912 under their own banner. ''A Trap for Santa Claus'' is a 1909 one-reel American silent drama film. A Biograph Company production, it was directed by D. W. Griffith and stars Henry B. Walthall, Marion Leonard, and Gladys Egan. Plot Arthur Rogers (Walthall) is an unemployed, drunkard husband and father who has no money for a Christmas celebration. A title describes the situation as "misery and want, the family's lot." Helen Rogers (Leonard), his wife, cries with their daughter over their poverty. Arthur leaves to go to the tavern. He asks the bartender (Sennett) to put an alcoholic drink on his tab, which he refuses. Two patrons buy drinks for Arthur and invite him to their table.
