Mario Miranda (boxer)
Mario Alberto Miranda Maraňon (born 15 May 1960) is a Colombian former professional boxer and boxing trainer who is best known for his 1982 challenge for the WBC's world featherweight title. Set to face legendary Mexican, world champion Salvador Sanchez for the title, Miranda, who was the number one challenger ranked by the WBC, was in line to face the winner of a rematch fight between Sanchez and Puerto Rico's Juan Laporte, which was scheduled for September 15 of that year at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Due to Sanchez's unexpected death on August 12 of that year, however, Miranda fought Laporte for the vacant world title instead, losing the contest by technical knockout. Miranda was the Colombian national featherweight and North American Boxing Federation's junior lightweight champion. A former carpenter, Miranda's ring nickname was "Martillo" ("The Hammer"). The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is an international professional boxing organization based in Panama. The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Alfredo Layne
Alfredo Layne (October 9, 1959 – June 25, 1999) was a Panamanian professional boxer. Layne is notable for having won the WBA and lineal super featherweight titles. Professional boxing career Layne, who began fighting professionally in 1981, fought in his first world title fight on May 24, 1986, as he travelled to San Juan to challenge the Puerto Rican world champion Wilfredo Gómez. Layne won the fight with a ninth round technical knockout to become the new WBA and Lineal champion. Layne's title reign was ended later in the year when he was beaten by Brian Mitchell in the first defence of his belt. Layne lost six out of his next seven fights, including a loss to Rafael Williams in December 1988, his final professional contest. Layne was shot dead in June 1999, aged 39.
