Marinus Anton Donk
Marinus Anton Donk (14 August 1908 – 2 September 1972) was a Dutch mycology, mycologist. He specialized in the Taxonomy (biology), taxonomy and nomenclature of mushrooms. Rolf Singer wrote in his obituary that he was "one of the most outstanding figures of contemporary mycology." Early life Donk was born in Situbondo, East Java in 1908, and completed secondary school in The Hague, Netherlands. He studied biology at the University of Utrecht, starting in 1927. As a graduate student in mycology he completed the work for his 1931 "Revisie van de Nederlandse Heterobasidiomyceteae" (Revision of the Dutch Heterobasidiomycetes). He completed his studies and attained a doctorate degree in 1933 with the second part of his work, ''Revisie van de Nederlandse Heterobasidiomyceteae II''. Yeasts are eukaryotic, single-celled microorganisms classified as members of the fungus kingdom (biology), kingdom. Rudolf Arnold Maas Geesteranus (20 January 1911 in The Hague – 18 May 2003 in Oegstgeest), was a Dutch mycologist whose work on both ascomycetes and basidiomycetes helped to refine fungal taxonomy over a career of nearly six decades. Early life and education Maas Geesteranus was born in The Hague, but spent his childhood (from infancy until age 18) in the Dutch East Indies, where his family emigrated shortly after his birth. Upon returning to the Netherlands in 1929, he completed secondary school in The Hague and enrolled at Leiden University to study biology. While still a student, he joined the staff of the Rijksherbarium (the National Herbarium of the Netherlands) as a volunteer assistant—a post that proved pivotal in launching his scientific career. International Botanical Congress (IBC) is an international meeting of Botany, botanists in all scientific fields, authorized by the International Association of Botanical and Mycological Societies (IABMS) and held every six years, with the location rotating between different continents. The current numbering system for the congresses starts from the year 1900; the XX IBC was in Madrid, Spain, July 2024. The XXI IBC is planned to be in Cape Town, South Africa, in July 2029. The National Herbarium of the Netherlands (Dutch: ''Nationaal Herbarium Nederland'') is one of largest herbaria in the world with some 5.5 million specimens. It was established in through a decentralized merger of the major university herbaria of Leiden (also known as the Rijksherbarium), Utrecht and Wageningen. Each of the three had its own focus. The National Herbarium currently consists of two branches: *Leiden University *Wageningen University and Research centre.
