Marilyn King
Marilyn Elizabeth King (born May 21, 1949) is an American former pentathlete. In 1971 she won the AAU title and placed fourth at the Pan American Games. She finished 17th at the 1976 Summer Olympics. At the 1972 Games King failed to complete her program due to an ankle injury. While preparing for the 1980 Moscow Olympics she injured her lower back in a car accident. She managed to recover and place second at the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials, but could not attend the Games due to their boycott by the United States. King graduated from the California State University, East Bay. She founded Beyond Sports, an organization that applies imagery to a wide range of individual and social concerns, such as world peace. Pentathlon
A pentathlon is a contest featuring five events. The name is derived from Greek: combining the words ''pente'' (five) and -''athlon'' (competition) ( gr, πένταθλον). The first pentathlon was documented in Ancient Greece and was part of the Ancient Olympic Games. Five events were contested over one day for the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, starting with the long jump, javelin throwing, and discus throwing, followed by the '' stadion'' (a short foot race) and wrestling. Pentathletes were considered to be among the most skilled athletes, and their training was often part of military service—each of the five events in the pentathlon was thought to be useful in war or battle. With the revival of the Olympic Games in the modern era, the pentathlon returned in two formats. The Women's pentathlon competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal was held on 25–26 July. After four of the five events, with only the 200 metres remaining, the top 8 of the 19 competitors were separated by less than 100 points: * Nadiya Tkachenko - 3788 * Lyudmila Popovskaya - 3772 * Burglinde Pollak - 3768 * Diane Jones - 3764 * Christine Laser - 3757 * Margit Papp - 3726 * Siegrun Siegl - 3718 * Jane Frederick - 3693 All of the leaders were matched against each other in the final heat. After the point scoring was calculated, Siegl and Laser had finished =1st with 4745 points, with Pollak 3rd with 4740 points. The women's pentathlon combined event at the 1972 Olympic Games took place on September 2 & 3. The favorites going into the Olympics were Heide Rosendahl and Burglinde Pollak. With Rosendahl narrowly defeating Pollack, by 24 points at the 1971 European Athletics Championships.
