Marie Decca
Marie Decca was the stage name of Mary Smith ( Johnston; after first marriage, Chrisman; after second marriage, Smith; 1859-unknown), an American lyric soprano operatic singer. She became known as the "Jenny Lind of America". Loomis (1898) described her voice as having the remarkable range of three octaves, reaching to the phenomenal pitch of A natural in alt, while Willard & Livermore (1893) described her as a soprano of flexible and remarkable range, reaching F natural, with exquisite tone and strength. Her stage name was rendered as her veritable cognomen was Johnston, but Johnston and Italian don't mix well. So her music teacher made her sing a piece beginning ''d, e, c, c, a'', and that "deccarated" her with a mellifluous name. Early life and education Mary Sanders Johnston was born in Georgetown, Ohio. ''A Woman of the Century: Fourteen Hundred Seventy Biographical Sketches, Accompanied by Portraits of Leading American Women, in all Walks of Life'' is a compendium of biographical sketches of American women. It was published in 1893 by Charles Wells Moulton. The editors, Frances Willard, Frances E. Willard and Mary Livermore, Mary A. Livermore, were assisted by a group of contributors. The biographical dictionary had 830 pages measuring . It was printed from a full-face wikt:brevier, brevier type on heavy paper. The typography was by Charles Wells Moulton, the engravings and electrotypes by the Buffalo Electrotype and Engraving Company, the press work by the Kittinger Printing Company, the paper by the S. Blanche Marchesi
Blanche Marchesi (4 April 1863 – 15 December 1940) was a French mezzo-soprano or dramatic soprano and voice teacher best known for her interpretations of the works of Richard Wagner. She was the daughter of Mathilde Marchesi, Mathilde Graumann Marchesi, a German voice instructor who taught a variety of well-known opera singers, including Emma Eames, Nellie Melba, and Emma Calvé. Early life and career Marchesi was born in Paris in February 1863. She received her education at boarding schools in Frankfurt, German Empire and later in Paris. Initially trained as a violinist, she decided to pursue a singing career in 1881. Her debut concert took place at Queen's Hall in 1896. While opera critics at the time praised her interpretive ability, they criticized her technical skill. Fra Diavolo (opera)
''Fra Diavolo, ou L'hôtellerie de Terracine'' (''Fra Diavolo, or The Inn of Terracina'') is an opéra comique in three acts by the French composer Daniel Auber, from a libretto by Auber's regular collaborator Eugène Scribe. It is loosely based on the life of the Itrani guerrilla leader Michele Pezza, active in southern Italy in the period 1800-1806, who went under the name of Fra Diavolo ("Brother Devil"). Diavolo fought against the French, who occupied parts of Italy, pillaging different towns on his way. Once French occupation ended, Diavolo was pardoned. When Napoleon recaptured Naples, a price was put on Diavolos head and he was hung in the public marketplace. He is now celebrated in Italian folk legends and through works like this opera. It premiered in Vienna, at the Kärntnertortheater, on 19 May 1842.
