Marie Bloch
Marie Cecile Bloch (1902–1970) was a French astronomer and astrophysicist. She is noted for her work on stellar spectroscopy. She was awarded the Lalande Prize by the French Academy of Sciences in 1960 for her scientific work in this field. Biography Bloch was born on 26 July 1902 in Lyon, France. She was born to a Jewish family of five children. Her father, Salomon Bloch, was a watchmaker who immigrated from Hégenheim, Switzerland. He was said to have been the guardian of Lyon's synagogue. The Blochs descended from a Jewish clan that settled in Alsace since the 17th century. Bloch's grandfather decided to move to Lyon when Alsace was occupied by the Germans after the French defeat during the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. In 1918, Bloch obtained a scholarship to study at the Ecole Technique Municipale (the City Technical School), which was established by the then mayor of Lyon, E. Herriot. The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German War, often referred to in France as the War of 1870, was a conflict between the Second French Empire and the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia. AG Pegasi
AG Pegasi is a symbiotic binary star in the constellation Pegasus, composed of a red giant and white dwarf which are separated by 2.5 astronomical units and complete an orbit every 818 days. It is classified as a symbiotic nova; it has undergone one extremely slow nova outburst and a smaller outburst. Initially a magnitude 9 star, AG Pegasi brightened and peaked at an apparent magnitude of 6.0 around 1885 before gradually fading to magnitude 9 in the late 20th century. Its spectrum was noted by earlier observers to resemble P Cygni. The spectrum of the hotter star has changed drastically over 160 years, leading investigators Scott Kenyon and colleagues to surmise that its hotter component, originally a white dwarf, accumulated enough material from the donor giant star to begin burning hydrogen and enlarge and brighten into an A-type white supergiant around 1850. Z Andromedae
Z Andromedae is a binary star system consisting of a red giant and a white dwarf. It is the prototype of a type of cataclysmic variable star known as symbiotic variable stars or simply Z Andromedae variables. The brightness of those stars vary over time, showing a ''quiescent'', more stable phase and then an ''active'' one with a more pronounced variability and stronger brightening and/or dimming. Binary system Z Andromedae is a binary star system. The two components have a circular orbit that takes 759 days to complete.
