Mariano Vivanco Valiente
Bishop Mariano Vivanco Valiente (3 April 1933 in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba – 23 August 2004 in Matanzas, Cuba) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matanzas (1987–2004). He studied humanities, philosophy and theology at El Buen Pastor Seminary in Havana. He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1961, in Havana, Cuba. He was assigned to the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar “ Our Lady of Pilar” in Havava. In 1977 he was named Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Havana and at the same time named rector of the Santuario de San Lázaro del Rincón. He was appointed Bishop of Matanzas on May 18, 1987, by Pope John Paul II and consecrated on June 29, 1987, in the Cathedral of Havana by Mons. San Antonio De Los Baños
San Antonio de los Baños is a municipality and town in the Artemisa Province of Cuba. It is located 26 km from the city of Havana, and the Ariguanabo River runs through it. It was founded in 1802. History There are 39 schools in the town, employing over 600 teachers. These schools include an academy of plastic arts, a school for training art teachers, and the International School of Cinema and Television Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión which was established in 1986. The town's library was founded in 1975, and has a collection of more than 32,000 books. There is also the San Antonio de los Baños Municipal Museum. Jaime Lucas Ortega Y Alamino
Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino (18 October 1936 – 26 July 2019) was a Cuban prelate of the Catholic Church who served as Archdiocese of Havana, Archbishop of Havana from 1981 to 2016. He was appointed to the College of Cardinals in 1994, the second Cuban to hold that distinction. Early life and ordination Ortega was born on 18 October 1936 in Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba. He studied for the priesthood at the Seminary of San Alberto Magno in Matanzas and at the Seminary of Foreign Missions in Laval, Quebec, Canada. He was ordained a priest on 2 August 1964 by Bishop José Domínguez Rodríguez of Matanzas. He was assigned to various parishes in the Diocese of Matanzas from 1964 to 1966. In church governance, a diocese or bishopric is the ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop. History In the later organization of the Roman Empire, the increasingly subdivided provinces were administratively associated in a larger unit, the diocese (Latin ''dioecesis'', from the Greek term διοίκησις, meaning "administration"). Havana Cathedral (''Catedral de la Purísima Concepción de María'') is one of eleven Catholic cathedrals on the island.
