Mariano Castro (Californio)
Mariano Castro (1784 – 1857) was a Californio soldier, ranchero, and local leader in early Alta California. Born near present‑day San Francisco, he served in the Spanish military and worked on the mission‑founding expedition led by Father Junípero Serra. After moving to San José, he held the office of Alcalde (mayor) around 1827. In 1844–45, Castro inherited Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas, a tract of mission land spanning parts of today’s Mountain View and Sunnyvale, California. He farmed and raised cattle there until his death in San José in 1857. Following California’s transition to U.S. governance, Castro's family defended their land under the Land Act of 1851, though much was lost to legal disputes and squatters. His descendants continued to shape Mountain View, donating land for schools, churches and laying out streets bearing the Castro name.
