Maria Assunta Pozio
Maria Assunta Pozio (died 2018) was an Italian mathematician known for her research in partial differential equations, including a collaboration with the Swiss mathematician Catherine Bandle. A special issue of Rendiconti di Matematica e delle sue Applicazioni was dedicated to her memory. Partial Differential Equations
In mathematics, a partial differential equation (PDE) is an equation which involves a multivariable function and one or more of its partial derivatives. The function is often thought of as an "unknown" that solves the equation, similar to how is thought of as an unknown number solving, e.g., an algebraic equation like . However, it is usually impossible to write down explicit formulae for solutions of partial differential equations. There is correspondingly a vast amount of modern mathematical and scientific research on methods to numerically approximate solutions of certain partial differential equations using computers. Catherine Bandle
Catherine Bandle (born 22 March 1943) is a Swiss mathematician known for her research on differential equations, including semilinear elliptic equations and reaction-diffusion equations, and for her book on isoperimetric inequalities. She is a professor emerita of mathematics at the University of Basel. Education and career Bandle completed her doctorate (Dr. math.) at ETH Zurich in 1971. Her dissertation, ''Konstruktion isoperimetrischer Ungleichungen der mathematischen Physik aus solchen der Geometrie'', concerned isoperimetric inequalities and was jointly supervised by Joseph Hersch and Alfred Huber. Like Alice Roth before her, she received the ETH Silver Medal for her dissertation, and she continued at ETH Zurich for a habilitation in 1974. She was the first woman mathematician and one of the earliest women to earn a habilitation at ETH Zurich. In Italy, the ''laurea'' is the main post-secondary academic degree. The name originally referred literally to the laurel wreath, since ancient times a sign of honor and now worn by Italian students right after their official graduation ceremony and sometimes during the graduation party.
