Margaret Verney
Margaret Maria Verney (née Hay-Williams or Williams-Hay) (3 December 1844 – 7 October 1930), was an English-born Welsh educationist. Verney was the daughter of Lady Sarah Elizabeth Amherst and her husband John Hay-Williams, 2nd Baronet Williams of Bodelwyddan. On the death of her father in 1859, she inherited his house "Rhianfa", on Anglesey, which she retained as a family home. In 1868 she married Sir Edmund Hope Verney, MP, then merely Captain Verney. She became a leading campaigner for girls' education in the UK. In 1894 she became a member of the Statutory Council of the University of Wales, holding the position until 1922. In 1904 she produced an edition of the ''Memoirs of the Verney Family during the Seventeenth Century''. She also contributed to the ''Dictionary of National Biography''. Sources *R. F. Sarah Elizabeth Hay-Williams
Lady Sarah Elizabeth Hay-Williams (née Amherst; 9 July 1801 – 8 August 1876) was an English artist and botanical illustrator. She was born on 9 July 1801 to Sarah Amherst and William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst. She travelled with her parents to India and while there completed several watercolour paintings now held in the collection of the British Library. She later married Sir John Hay-Williams in 1842. In 1846 Hay-Williams contributed a watercolour to Edwards's Botanical Register. After returning to the United Kingdom she had two children including Margaret Verney. She died in 1876 at Chateau Rhianfa in Anglesey on 8 August 1876. John Hay Williams
Sir John Hay Williams, 2nd Baronet (9 January 1794 – 10 September 1859) was a descendant of Sir William Williams, who built Bodelwyddan Castle. He was born at Bodelwyddan, the son of Sir John Williams, 1st Baronet and took by royal licence on 12 May 1842 the name of Hay before that of Williams. He was in turn High Sheriff of Anglesey (1832), High Sheriff of Flintshire (1836) and High Sheriff of Denbighshire (1839). Sir John is responsible for the renovation work at Bodelwyddan Castle in the mid-19th century which resulted in the house which stands on the site today. Bodelwyddan
Bodelwyddan () is a village, electoral ward and community in Denbighshire, Wales, approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of Rhyl. The parish includes several smaller hamlets such as Marli and Little Pengwern. Bodelwyddan is home to over sixty listed buildings including notable locations such as the Marble Church and Bodelwyddan Castle. The population of only 2,106, increasing to 2,147 at the 2011 census, is served by a single public house, a small number of shops, two takeaways (a Chinese takeaway called The Lucky Garden and the fish and chips shop ‘Church View Chippy’), a primary school and a driving range; as well as having its own community centre. It is now bypassed by the A55 road, but continues to be a hub of activity due to the presence of Glan Clwyd Hospital. It has a town council with a mayor. Edmund Hope Verney
Sir Edmund Hope Verney, 3rd Baronet FRGS, DL, JP (6 April 1838 – 8 May 1910) was a British naval officer, author and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1885 and 1891. Background and education Verney was the eldest son of Sir Harry Verney, 2nd Baronet, and his first wife Eliza Hope, daughter of Admiral Sir George Johnstone Hope. Verney was educated at Windlesham House School and Harrow School and entered the Royal Navy in 1851. He succeeded his father as baronet in 1894. Career Verney served in the Crimean War between 1854 and 1855 being afterwards honoured with the Crimea Medal and its Sebastopol clasp and the Turkish Crimean War medal. Following his service during the Indian Mutiny between 1857 and 1858, where he was mentioned in despatches and received the Indian Mutiny Medal with the Lucknow clasp, he was promoted to lieutenant. Verney Family
The Verney family purchased the manor of Middle Claydon in Buckinghamshire, England, in the 1460s and still resides there today at the manor house known as Claydon House. This family had been seated previously at Fleetmarston in Buckinghamshire then at Pendley in Hertfordshire. It is not to be confused with the unrelated but also ancient and prominent Verney family of Compton Verney in Warwickshire. Early history The pedigree of Verney of Middle Claydon commences with Ralph de Verney (fl. 1216–1223), but the fortunes of the family were made by Sir Ralph Verney (c. 1410–1478). After settling in Buckinghamshire in the 13th century, the family had purchased Middle Claydon by the 1460s and it was during this period that Sir Ralph Verney became Lord Mayor of London in 1465 and M.P. for the city in 1472.
