Margaret Trist
Margaret Trist (27 October 1914 – 2 March 1986) was an acclaimed Australian novelist and short story writer. Early life and education Margaret Bethesda Trist was the daughter of Olga Hargreaves Lucas, no father's name being registered on her birth certificate. Born on 27 October 1914 in Dalby, Queensland, she grew up with her maternal grandparents and was educated at St Columba’s Convent in Dalby. Career Trist moved to Sydney in 1931 where she took clerical jobs. Trist's first appearance in print was in ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' in June 1935 when a two paragraph story titled "A Grey Headstone: "Sarah, Relict of Thomas" appeared. An avid reader of ''The Bulletin'' while growing up, her short stories published in that periodical from 1936. As well as The Bulletin, her work was published in the literary journals '' Meanjin'' and '' Southerly.'' St Leonards, New South Wales
St Leonards is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. St Leonards is located north-west of the Sydney central business district and lies across the local government areas of Municipality of Lane Cove, North Sydney Council and the City of Willoughby. History St Leonards was named after English statesman Viscount Sydney of St Leonards. Originally, St Leonards applied to the whole area from the present suburb of North Sydney to Gore Hill. The township of St Leonards in 1883 is now North Sydney. The oldest railway station on the North Shore line opened in 1890 in St Leonards and originally only ran to Hornsby. The Gore Hill cemetery was established on the Pacific Highway in 1868 and was the main burial site for the area until its closure in 1975. The Advocate (Melbourne)
''The Advocate'' was a weekly newspaper founded in Melbourne, Victoria in 1868 and published for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne from 1919 to 1990. It was first housed in Lonsdale Street, then in the grounds of St Francis' Church, and from 1937 in a'Beckett Street, Melbourne. History The paper was founded in Melbourne in February 1868 by Samuel Vincent Winter, who was also a proprietor and editor of the Melbourne ''Herald'', with assistance from Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, the Very Rev. J. Dalton, S.J., the Rev. G. V. Barry, and Hon. Michael O'Grady, as an outlet for Irish Catholic news and opinions. Hal Porter
Harold Edward "Hal" Porter (16 February 1911 – 29 September 1984) was an Australian novelist, playwright, poet and short story writer. Biography Porter was born in Albert Park, Victoria, grew up in Bairnsdale, and worked as a journalist, teacher and librarian. A car accident just before the outbreak of World War II prevented him from serving in the armed forces. His first stories were published in 1942 and by the 1960s he was writing full-time. His 1963 memoir, ''The Watcher on the Cast Iron Balcony'', is regarded as an Australian masterpiece. His other works were less successful. The literary critic Laurie Clancy said: "Porter's novels are, with one exception, less successful than his stories, not least because his scorn for most of his characters becomes wearying over the length of a novel." Dalby () is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Dalby had a population of 12,719 people. It is on the Darling Downs and is the administrative centre for the Western Downs Region. Geography Dalby is approximately 82.3 kilometres (51 mi) west of Toowoomba, west northwest of the state capital, Brisbane, 269 kilometres (167 mi) east southeast of Roma and 535 kilometres (332 mi) east southeast of Charleville at the junction of the Warrego, Moonie and Bunya Highways. Katharine Susannah Prichard (4 December 18832 October 1969) was an Australian author and co-founding member of the Communist Party of Australia. Early life Prichard was born in Levuka, Fiji in 1883 to Australian parents. She spent her childhood in Launceston, Tasmania, then moved to Melbourne, where she won a scholarship to South Melbourne College. Her father, Tom Prichard, was editor of the Melbourne '' Sun'' newspaper. She worked as a governess and journalist in Victoria, then travelled to England in 1908.
