Margaret Castro
Margaret "Margie" Castro (born August 22, 1959), also known as Margaret Castro-Gomez, is a former Olympic-level female judoka for the United States from Manhattan, New York. Competitive career Castro is rather tall at and had a competitive weight of 190 lb. In 1977, at the age of 17, she made history by becoming the youngest woman to win the International Championships. She is an 11-time national champion who competed against the likes of fellow American Maureen Braziel during her competitive career. She won the open weight class but gained silver at the 1987 Pan American Games, losing to Nilmaris Santini. Rusty Kanokogi
Rena Kanokogi (''née'' Glickman; July 30, 1935 – November 21, 2009) was a renowned Jewish-American judo expert. In 1959, disguised as a man, she won a medal at a YMCA judo tournament, but had to return it after acknowledging that she was a woman. Traveling to Japan to continue her judo training, Kanokogi became the first woman allowed to train in the men's group at the Kodokan. She is perhaps best known for pioneering women's judo competition at the Olympic Games. Rusty is often referred to as, "The Mother of Women's Judo". Demonstration Sport
A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games, but may also occur at other sporting events. Demonstration sports were officially introduced in the 1912 Summer Olympics, when Sweden decided to include glima, traditional Icelandic wrestling, in the Olympic program, but with its medals not counting as official. Most organizing committees then decided to include at least one demonstration sport at each edition of the Games, usually some typical or popular sport in the host country, like baseball at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and taekwondo at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. From 1912 to 1992, only two editions of the Summer Olympics did not have demonstration sports on their program. Nilmaris "Nilmari" Santini Martin (May 25, 1959 – March 25, 2006) was a female judoka from Puerto Rico. She competed for her native country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, where she was defeated in the second round of the repêchage. Santini won two silver medals at the 1991 Pan American Games, in the Women's Heavyweight (+ 72 kg) and in the Women's Open Class division, after having claimed the gold medal four years earlier in Indianapolis, United States. Maureen Braziel
Maureen Braziel was one of the pioneers of Women's Judo competition. She has been thought of as being one of the top Judoka in the United States, and within the 1970s. Competition She won the silver medal heavyweight in the 1971 British Open, and bronze in the open division. She was the first female to place in international competition in Judo. As a result, helped to make women's Judo a sport under the Amateur Athletic Union. Maureen was the women's US National 1st-place winner for the heavyweight division and the grand champion for the years 1974, 1975, and 1976. At a competition weight of 180 lbs, Maureen was strong enough to compete with men. She defeated Diane Pierce in 1974 for the national championship.
