GWK (car)
The GWK was a British car made in Maidenhead, Berkshire, between 1911 and 1931. It got its name from its founders, Arthur Grice, J. Talfourd Wood, and C.M. Keiller. The cars were unusual in using a friction drive system. Pre-war The prototype was made in a stable in Beckenham, Kent, and used a Coventry-Simplex engine, rear-mounted. The drive system involved the engine, which was mounted across the chassis, turning a disc on which a wheel could be moved from the periphery to the centre. Top speed was with the driven wheel furthest from the centre and reverse was obtained by moving it past the centre. A few examples were sold before the company moved to Datchet, Buckinghamshire in 1912. Proper production now started still using a water-cooled, Coventry-Simplex twin-cylinder engine of 1069 cc. 1,045 of the two-seat cars were made before the outbreak of World War 1 and a move to war work; this first stage of car production ended in mid-1915. Coventry Climax
Coventry Climax was a British manufacturer of forklift trucks, fire pumps, racing engines, and other speciality engines. History Pre WWI The company was started in 1903 as Lee Stroyer, a joint venture by Jens Stroyer and Pelham Lee. In 1905, following the departure of Stroyer, it was relocated to Paynes Lane, Coventry, and renamed as Coventry Simplex by Horace Pelham Lee, a former Daimler employee, who saw an opportunity in the nascent internal combustion engine market. An early user was GWK, who produced over 1,000 light cars with Coventry-Simplex two-cylinder engines between 1911 and 1915. Just before the First World War, a Coventry-Simplex engine was used by Lionel Martin to power the first Aston Martin car. Zoller Supercharger
The Zoller supercharger was a vane-type supercharger created by (1882-1934) who had patents regarding supercharging engines before WW1. The Zoller supercharger was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Company History In the UK the distributor for Zoller superchargers was Forced Induction Ltd of London c1931, then M.A. McEvoy (London) Ltd of Leaper Street Works, Derby. A McEvoy advert in 1933 claimed they designed, and made the Zoller superchargers. Supporting that they were manufactured in the UK was an article from 1939 which stated that they were manufactured in the UK from 1931 to 1936. This also stated that they were made under licence by Petters Limited of Yeovil for application to their 2-stroke engine, though by 1945 the Petter superscavenge (SS) engine had Roots-type blowers (Holmes-Connersville blowers on the six cylinder). Anzani
Anzani was an engine manufacturer founded by the Italian Alessandro Anzani (1877–1956), which produced proprietary engines for aircraft, cars, boats, and motorcycles in factories in Britain, France and Italy. Overview From his native Italy, Anzani moved to France where he became involved in cycle racing. He moved on to motorcycles and designed and built a record-breaking lightweight engine. In 1907, he set up a small workshop in Paris with three staff and while they were building his engines, he designed a hydrofoil powered by one of his engines and propellers. The British Union of Fascists (BUF) was a British fascist political party formed in 1932 by Oswald Mosley. Mosley changed its name to the British Union of Fascists and National Socialists in 1936 and, in 1937, to the British Union. In 1939, following the start of the Second World War, the party was proscribed by the British government and in 1940 it was disbanded. The BUF emerged in 1932 from the electoral defeat of its antecedent, the New Party, in the 1931 general election. Oswald Mosley
Sir Oswald Ernald Mosley, 6th Baronet (16 November 1896 – 3 December 1980), was a British aristocrat and politician who rose to fame during the 1920s and 1930s when he, having become disillusioned with mainstream politics, turned to fascism. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Harrow from 1918 to 1924 and for Smethwick from 1926 to 1931. He founded the British Union of Fascists (BUF) in 1932 and led it until its forced disbandment in 1940. The Marendaz Trainer was a two-seat low-wing training aircraft built in the UK just before World War II. Only one was completed. Development In 1939 the newly established Marendaz Aircraft Ltd. built a two-seat, single-engined low wing cantilever monoplane called the Marendaz Trainer. D.M.K. Marendaz, the company's founder, claimed to have designed it though this has been disputed, not least because Marendaz had claimed the work of others as his own before. The true designer is unknown. The Trainer was in most respects a conventional open cockpit two seater of its time. Its fuselage and wings were wooden structures skinned with plywood. Only the control surfaces were fabric covered.
