Maredudd Ap Ifan
Maredudd ab Ifan ab Robert (died 1525), also spelt Maredudd ap Ieuan and Meredith ab Ieuan, was a Welsh landed Gentleman and succeeded his father Ieuan ap Robert ap Maredudd (1437–1468). He had two full brothers Robert and John and three half siblings born of his father Ieuan ap Robert’s second marriage to Gwenhwyfar ferch Madog Vaughan of Llwyn Dyrus they being: Gruffudd Vaughan, Ieuan and an unnamed sister. He purchased and rebuilt Gwydyr Castle after it was destroyed in the 1460s and made it the family home. He is an ancestor of Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet. To avoid implication in the feuds of his kinsmen in Eifionydd, Maredudd purchased the lease of Dolwyddelan Castle Dolwyddelan Castle ( ; cy, Castell Dolwyddelan; ) is a Welsh castle located near Dolwyddelan in Conwy County Borough in North Wales. Gwydyr Castle
Gwydir Castle is situated in the Conwy valley, Wales, a mile to the west of the ancient market town of Llanrwst and to the south of the large village of Trefriw. An example of a fortified manor house dating back to c1500, it is located on the edge of the floodplain of the river Conwy, and overlooked from the west by the now-forested slopes of Gwydir Forest. Etymology The name 'Gwydir' likely derives from a contraction of ''Gwy-dir'', "water land," the site long being subject to flooding from the nearby river Conwy. Another suggestion is that it might derive from ''Gwaed-dir'', "the bloody land,", this having been the scene of some battles as detailed below. John Wynn, 1st Baronet
Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet (1553 – 1 March 1627), was a Welsh baronet, Member of Parliament and antiquary. Life He was the son of Morys Wynn ap John, whom he succeeded in 1580, inheriting Gwydir Castle in Carnarvonshire. John was educated at All Souls College, Oxford (1570, awarded BA 1578) and studied law at Furnival's Inn (1572) and the Inner Temple (1576). He claimed to be directly descended from the princes of Gwynedd through Rhodri ab Owain son of Owain Gwynedd. The male line from his family died out in 1779 (see 'Legacy' section below) and the senior male line passed to the Anwyl of Tywyn family. His mother was Jane (Siân) Bulkeley, daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley and his wife Catherine Griffith, and sister of Sir Richard Bulkeley, head of the Anglesey branch of a powerful landowning family, who originally came from Cheshire. Dolwyddelan Castle
Dolwyddelan Castle ( ; cy, Castell Dolwyddelan; ) is a Welsh castle located near Dolwyddelan in Conwy County Borough in North Wales. It is thought to have been built in the early 13th century by Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd and Wales. Initially comprising just one tower with two floors, a second tower was built in the late 13th century, and a third floor was added to the first during repairs in the late 15th century. Construction The castle was built, using mostly local grit and slate rubble, as one of the Snowdonian strongholds of the princes of Gwynedd. Though there are no records of the exact construction date, it is thought that a single rectangular tower, with two floors, was built in the early 13th century. Gwydyr
Gwydir Forest, also spelled Gwydyr, is located in Conwy county borough and the Snowdonia National Park in Wales. It takes its name from the ancient Gwydir Estate, established by the John Wynn family of Gwydir Castle, which owned this area. Natural Resources Wales uses the alternative spelling (i.e. Gwydyr Forest, Coedwig Gwydyr). Certainly as early as 1536, Leland wrote: "Gwydir lieth two bowshots above the River Conwy. It is a pretty place." Geography of the forest The forest broadly encircles the village of Betws-y-Coed, and much of its midsection lies within the parish. It reaches northwards to the village of Trefriw, and southwards to the village of Penmachno. It covers an area of over , including of productive woodland. John "Wynn" Ap Maredudd
John "Wynn" ap Maredudd (died 9 July 1559) was a Welsh Member of Parliament. He was son of Meredydd ap Ieuan ap Robert of Dolwyddelan, then Caernarvonshire. He had twenty six siblings. He is cited by Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet as his ancestor and head of the family at that time. He is believed to have had a number of children including Morys Wynn ap John, Owain Wynn ap John, Griffith Wynn ap John and Robert Wynn (MP). His brother -in-law was Edward Stanley, MP for Merioneth. He inherited his father's estates at Gwydir, Nantconwy, Dolwyddelan and Llanfrothen. He rebuilt Gwydir in 1555 and served as Member of Parliament for Caernarvonshire in 1542 (probably) and 1547–1551. He also served as High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire for 1544 and 1556. and as Custos Rotulorum of Merionethshire from 1543 to c.1548.
