Marcinkonys Eldership
Marcinkonys Eldership ( lt, Marcinkonių seniūnija) is a Lithuanian eldership, located in the south western part of Varėna District Municipality. Geography Marcinkonys Eldership is mostly covered by the Dainava Forest and it is one of the most sparsely populated and largest Lithuanian elderships. It is in the Dainava Plain, undulated with massifs of continental dunes. The Čepkeliai Marsh is located at its southern part. Elderships Of Lithuania
A ''seniūnija'' (in English: eldership, elderate, ward, parish, or subdistrict) is the smallest administrative division of Lithuania. An eldership may comprise a very small region consisting of few villages, one single town, or a part of a big city. Elderships vary in size and population depending on their location and nature. A few elderships make up a municipality. Šilainiai (Kaunas) and Dainava (Kaunas) are the most populous elderates, with population counts over , exceeding the population of some entire municipalities. Elderships manage small-scale local matters, such as repairing pavements and dirt roads, and keep records on all families living in the eldership. Dzūkija National Park
__NOTOC__ Dzūkija National Park - a national park in Dzūkija, Lithuania, was established in 1991 in order to preserve the pine forests, the landscape, and the villages of the region. The area encompasses 584.53 square kilometers on the banks of the Nemunas River. The park is the largest protected area in Lithuania. It belongs to both the Association of Baltic National Parks and the Federation of European National Parks. Features The park enjoys a more continental climate than other parts of the country. Its most distinctive landscapes are the mainland dune massifs located in Marcinkonys, Lynežeris, Grybaulia, and Šunupis. Zervynos
Zervynos is an ethnographic village in the Varėna district, Lithuania. It is situated within the territory of the Dzūkija National Park near the Ūla River. The Saint Petersburg–Warsaw Railway runs through this village. Zervynos has 48 homesteads; 8 homesteads and 32 separate buildings are officially declared ethnographic monuments. The village was among the sites short-listed for nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the village is isolated by the Dainava Forest, it is a busy place during summer as tourists kayaking in the Ūla River pass through the settlement. Zervynos village is located c. from Varėna, from Marcinkonys, from Pauosupė (the nearest settlement). History Zervynos was first mentioned in written sources in 1742. Margionys
Margionys is a village in Dzukija National Park in Lithuania, located south-west of Marcinkonys. It is located 115 km away from Vilnius, 50 km away from Alytus and at the hand's reach from Druskininkai. Back in the year 1637, Margionys had 11 households. Number of households in the village increased to 44 by the year 1889, with a total population of 271 individuals at the time. After the plague and wars, the village shrunk, with only two families living in it in 1738. By 1959, the village again had 261 inhabitants. This number has decreased to 98 in 1998 and 81 in 2003.
