''Violet Cries'' is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Esben and the Witch (band), Esben and the Witch. The album was released on 31 January 2011 through Matador Records, Matador. The album came shortly after the band's shortlisting in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. A UK tour accompanied the album as well. The album spawned three singles including "Marching Song (Esben and the Witch song), Marching Song" which was moderately popular and is usually associated with the band. The album reached number 13 in the UK Indie Chart and has been well critically acclaimed. Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s.
