Marcel Martel (musician)
Marcel Martel (February 1, 1925 – April 13, 1999) was a French Canadian singer-songwriter and composer. Born in Drummondville, Quebec, and playing country music since childhood, Martel first found success in 1947 with his songs "La Chaine de nos coeurs" and "Souvenir de mon enfance". Over the course of a thirty five-year career he released nearly two hundred records, frequently collaborating with his wife Noëlla Therrien, his daughter Renée Martel, and fellow Québécois country singer Paul Brunelle. Drummondville
Drummondville is a city in the Centre-du-Québec region of Quebec, located east of Montreal on the Saint-François River. The population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 79,258. The mayor of Drummondville is Stéphanie Lacoste. Drummondville is the seat of Drummond Regional County Municipality, and of the judicial district of Drummond. History Drummondville was founded in June 1815 by Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Heriot. The purpose of the town was to provide a home for British soldiers in the War of 1812, and to guard the Saint-François (St Francis) River against American attacks. The town was named after Sir Gordon Drummond, the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada between 1813 and 1816. The construction of the Hemmings Falls hydro-electric dam in 1920 brought a new wave of industrial growth to the Drummondville area. He is considered the pioneer of country in Quebec and the main source of influence on the artist who would popularize the genre, Willie Lamothe. Brunelle continued with RCA until 1975, and then continued to record on the Bonanza label. Career Born in 1923, Brunelle was one of the child singers in his hometown of Granby early in 1930. Employed at the Miner Rubber, he bought his first guitar on credit for $6.50. During the war, he won twice, in 1943 and 1944, the amateur competition by Living Room Furniture, organized by AM radio CKAC.
