Marcel Bollinger
Marcel Bollinger (17 April 1923 in Schaffhausen – 17 May 2003 in Beringen) was a Swiss freethinker. Biography Bollinger and his later wife Emmi were politically shaped in Schaffhausen youth groups of the working-class movement of the 1930s. He became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland and trade unionists and was from 1956 to 1988 SP municipal council in Beringen. From 1958 to 1979 he was the central president of the Freethinkers Association of Switzerland. BURL
A burl (American English) or burr (British English) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Burl formation is typically a result of some form of stress such as an injury or a viral or fungal infection. More scientifically, a burl is “the result of hyperplasia, a greatly abnormal proliferation of xylem production by the vascular cambium”. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood sought after in woodworking, and some items may reach high prices on the wood market. The Freethinkers Association of Switzerland (FAS) is a Swiss nonprofit organisation for freethought. It is the result of the merger of several late 19th century and early 20th century local freethinkers associations throughout Switzerland into a national society, currently headquartered in Bern.
